Job Title: Infrastructure & Systems Engineer Role Overview

This is a technical role responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and continuous improvement of a self-hosted cloud infrastructure and associated technologies. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a team environment, managing multiple concurrent tasks across a diverse technology stack.

The role includes participation in an on-call rota and occasional out-of-hours support, including evenings and weekends, in line with team practices.

Key Responsibilities 1. Infrastructure Administration (60%)
  • Manage and maintain physical servers and storage infrastructure to meet performance targets and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Monitor internal and external applications and infrastructure proactively, identifying and resolving issues or escalating where necessary.
  • Collaborate with analysts to maintain systems in line with agreed standards and priorities.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and support user training where required.
  • Ensure adherence to system housekeeping and operational procedures.
2. Systems Development & Improvement (25%)
  • Analyse systems to ensure scalability, capacity, and future readiness.
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of technical architecture.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and service improvement.
  • Support major systems projects across the full lifecycle (planning, analysis, design, development, testing, and implementation).
  • Gather and document system requirements, evaluating software solutions where needed.
  • Troubleshoot and enhance existing systems.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry developments.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver new technologies and services.
3. Infrastructure Support (15%)
  • Ensure reliable operation of IT infrastructure by working closely with support teams, developers, and suppliers.
  • Respond to escalated incidents, diagnose issues, and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Maintain availability of critical systems and applications.
  • Identify recurring incidents and contribute to problem management processes.

  • Internal: Senior Management, Project Managers, Developers, Testers, Production & Support Teams
  • External: Suppliers and Client Representatives
Qualifications & Certifications
  • MCTS, VCP (Desirable)
Skills & Experience Technical (Essential)
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in technical support and implementation roles
  • At least 2 years providing 3rd line support
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Experience supporting diverse hardware and software environments
  • Linux system administration (including backups and software deployment)
  • Virtualisation platforms (e.g. VMware vSphere, KVM)
  • Storage technologies (e.g. Dell PowerStore, Cohesity, Nasuni; block and file storage)
  • Containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Windows and Linux systems administration
  • Experience providing helpdesk-style support to users
  • Ability to translate user requirements into technical solutions
