Purpose of the Role
Principle purposes of the role
A Data cabling infrastructure engineer is responsible for, installing, commissioning, and maintaining Data cabling infrastructure systems. They play a crucial role in ensuring the transmission of data on a clients LAN/WAN is optimised and efficient.
- Liaise with Operations & Project Managers to ensure clear and concise communications throughout lifespan of job/project
- Support and assist colleagues with questions, queries and/or training requirements in relation to Data cabling infrastructure systems
- Strive to achieve excellence in everything you do, ensuring clients receive the best possible service and experience
Key responsibilities include
Site Surveys and Planning:
- Conducting site surveys to assess and identify system requirements.
- Review and understand data cabling infrastructure designs based on network requirements and industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI, etc.).
- Assist the Projects team with development of detailed cabling layouts and schematics.
- Assist with development of cable routing, termination points, and equipment placement.
- Assist with estimations of material requirements and project timelines.
Installation and Termination:
- Installation of copper and fibre optic cables, including pulling, routing, and securing cables in cable trays, conduits, or other designated pathways/containment.
- Termination of cables using appropriate connectors (RJ45, ST, SC, LC, etc.) and appropriate tooling.
- Installation of network jacks, patch panels, and other hardware components.
Testing and Certification:
- Performs comprehensive testing of installed cables using cable certifiers to ensure compliance with industry standards and customer specifications.
- Identify and resolve cable faults/issues in line with industry and manufacturers guidelines.
- Generate detailed test reports documenting the performance of the cabling infrastructure.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance:
- Diagnose and resolve network connectivity problems related to cabling issues.
- Perform ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting of the cabling infrastructure.
- Update and maintain cabling documentation.
Project Management:
- Manage small, medium and large cabling projects (in line with skill set and experience), including resource allocation, and on-site material handling.
- Coordinate with key stakeholders (Operations Manager, Projects Manager etc.) to ensure smooth project execution.
Additional Responsibilities: Adherence to Standards:
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices, including safety regulations.
- Follow manufacturer's guidelines for cable installation and termination.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of the cabling infrastructure, including as-built drawings, test results, and maintenance records.
Communication:
- Communicates effectively with project managers, network engineers, and other team members.
- Provides clear and concise explanations of technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Customer Service:
- Liaising with clients to understand their needs and expectations.
- Providing technical advice and support.
- Responding to client inquiries and resolving issues promptly.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of networking principles and protocols.
- Proficiency in cable installation, termination, and testing techniques.
- Familiarity with cable testing equipment and software.
- Knowledge of cabling standards and best practices (TIA/EIA, BICSI).
- Ability to read and interpret network diagrams and blueprints.

Certifications (Optional):
- BICSI Installer I, II, or Technician certifications
