PHP Developer

We're excited to be working with a highly respected digital agency that is actively seeking a talented PHP Developer to join their growing team. Our client is known for delivering exceptional web solutions, with a strong focus on WordPress development as a robust application framework.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a PHP Developer who thrives on technical challenges and wants to work with modern development practices. Our client's projects involve extensively customizing WordPress to meet diverse client requirements, moving beyond off-the-shelf solutions.

What Our Client is Looking For

The ideal PHP Developer will have solid experience in structured, object-oriented PHP development, with a good understanding of MVC principles. While direct WordPress experience is a plus, candidates coming from similar PHP frameworks like Laravel or Drupal will find a supportive environment to adapt their skills.

You'll be working on the "back-of-the-back-end," tackling complex development challenges, building robust integrations with third-party APIs, and collaborating with their design and front-end teams to influence their technical stack. This developer role focuses heavily on writing clean, maintainable, object-oriented PHP code for custom plugin development and extending existing functionalities.

Key Responsibilities for this PHP Developer Role:

  • Develop and maintain sophisticated WordPress websites and web applications.

  • Write high-quality, object-oriented PHP code (PHP 8+) following modern best practices.

  • Build and maintain custom WordPress plugins tailored to specific client needs.

  • Integrate seamlessly with third-party APIs, handling all aspects from authentication to data syncing.

  • Perform testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting on existing sites.

  • Collaborate effectively within a team to solve complex WordPress, PHP, and integration development challenges.

  • Maintain high standards of code quality using version control (Git) and thorough documentation.

Essential Skills for this PHP Developer:

  • In-depth knowledge of modern PHP (8+) and OOP principles for custom web applications.

  • Experience with MySQL for database management.

  • Comfortable working with REST APIs and external system integrations.

  • Proficiency in a modern development environment, including IDEs, code repositories, and well-managed deployment processes (e.g., GitHub Actions to WP Engine, Kinsta, Cloudways).

  • An understanding of web performance and security best practices.

  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively and independently, especially in a remote setting.

  • A keen desire to learn and embrace new web technologies.

  • The ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic agency environment.

Desirable Skills:

  • Hands-on WordPress-based web development, including custom plugin development and WordPress theming (using tools like Timber and Twig).

  • Experience with Composer, WP-CLI, or automated testing (e.g., PHPUnit).

  • Familiarity with React and modern JavaScript (ES6+), particularly for extending the WordPress Block Editor (Gutenberg).

  • Experience with GitHub-based workflows, including pull requests and code reviews.

  • Comfortable with peer code reviews, giving and receiving constructive feedback.

  • Experience with Drupal development would be an added advantage.

What Our Client Offers:

This is a full-time, remote position with a baseline salary ranging between £40,000 and £50,000, depending on experience. You'll receive 23 days of paid holiday plus bank holidays, with an additional holiday bonus scheme for long service.

Our client fosters a supportive and collaborative environment with a low staff turnover, where continuous learning is encouraged. They provide a high-end MacBook and support for your home working setup. As an employee-owned company, they offer a transparent and equitable workplace, with the potential for tax-free bonuses when profits allow.
