Job summary
This pivotal senior role positions you at the forefront of digital transformation and clinical pharmacy innovation within the Trust. As Senior Pharmacy Technician for Digital, Improvement and Innovation, you'll be instrumental in shaping how medicines are prescribed, supplied and administered through our electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA) system.
You'll combine system expertise with pharmacy leadership, managing day-to-day ePMA operations, optimising drug files, order sets and decision support, and ensuring the system underpins safe, effective patient care. Working closely with the Digital Team, Pharmacy Senior Leadership Team and wider Trust Digital Teams, you'll act as a bridge between clinical services, digital programmes, and frontline users.

Main duties of the job

Lead ePMA operations: oversee day-to-day system administration, manage downtime/contingency plans, resolve incidents, and liaise with ICT and suppliers.

Optimise clinical content: maintain the drug file, decision support and order sets/templates to support formulary compliance, antimicrobial stewardship and care pathways.

Drive quality & safety: ensure compliance with medicines legislation, controlled drug governance, and national digital safety standards.

Analyse & report: use reporting tools to monitor usage, compliance and medicines expenditure; provide insight for audits, Datix investigations, KPIs and benefits realisation.

Support change & innovation: lead elements of ePMA implementation, upgrades and optimisation; contribute expertise to Trust-wide digital initiatives.

Train & enable staff: design, deliver and evaluate training, SOPs and induction for ePMA and related pharmacy digital systems across all user groups.

Collaborate across services: act as a key point of contact between Pharmacy, Digital/EPR teams, clinical colleagues and suppliers, ensuring shared priorities and effective communication.

Manage people & resources: supervise and mentor pharmacy staff; contribute to cost improvement by standardising digital workflows and reducing variation.

Support clinical services: participate in dispensary and checking duties, including weekend and bank holiday rotas, ensuring continuity of safe medicines supply.

Job responsibilities
This is a senior specialist role to support the implementation and ongoing development of the Trusts ePMA system.
Be a key member of the ePMA project team and support the development, implementation, testing and evaluation of the ePMA system at RJAH.
Responsible for supporting the delivery of the Trusts Digital Programme relating to medicines, ensuring the implementation of technology in a safe and controlled manner.
Support on the development, maintenance and optimisation of the electronic prescribing and administration elements of the Trust Electronic Patient Records EPR system.
Be prepared to be called on to lead specific aspects of the ePMA project.
Support the risk management, quality assurance and continuous improvement of the electronic prescribing and administration system.
Ensure that there are safe and adequate contingency systems in place in the event of computer system failure for electronic prescribing and medicines administration.
Work closely with the Electronic Patient Records (EPR) Team and Digital Programme team to provide Pharmacy oversight and authority to all digital initiatives that impact medicines optimisation.
Promote and support digital innovation in all systems and processes relating to medicines within the Pharmacy and across the Trust.
Provide professional input in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of systems and services to support clinical practice.
Ensure the optimisation of the Pharmacy digital systems to deliver the reports required to meet financial and clinical governance assurance framework.
Support the development of appropriate training for all users of the ePMA and Pharmacy digital systems.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- GCSE Maths and English (grade C or above) or equivalent.
- National BTEC or NVQ3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences (or equivalent).
- Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
- National Accredited Checking Technician (ACT) qualification or be willing and eligible to undertake qualification.
- Experience of working with a Pharmacy computer system e.g. JAC or EMIS
- Experience of developing, implementing and maintaining an ePMA system.
- Experience of writing / updating procedures and training documentation
- Experience of negotiating with healthcare staff, suppliers and/or external organisations.
Experience
- Recent and in-depth post qualification experience of working within a hospital pharmacy department as a Pharmacy Technician.
- Experience of working on a ward or clinical area as a Pharmacy Technician.
- Experience of working with a Pharmacy computer system e.g. JAC or EMIS
- Experience of dealing with difficult and complex situations, queries and complaints
- Experience of writing / updating procedures and training documentation
- Experience of supervising or line managing staff
Skills, Ability and Knowledge
- Good analytical and evaluative skills with the ability to investigate queries solve problems and take action if appropriate.
- Methodical with effective organisational skills in the workplace.
- Good keyboard skills and the ability to use various computer systems, including pharmacy computer systems, Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel, email and internet
- Evidence of Professional updating i.e. Continual Professional Development
- Knowledge of drug nomenclature e.g. DM+D and an appreciation of its application to clinical systems.
- Able to communicate complex issues to others where their understanding of the issue may be limited
- Knowledge of testing and implementing new IT systems.
