SQL DBA - AVP

Sumitomi Mitsui Finance Dublin is seeking a dedicated SQL Database Administrator to join their Dublin-based team, supporting a global Microsoft SQL Server estate that underpins business-critical operations. Sumitomo Mitsui Finance Dublin Limited (SMFD) is a wholly owned subsidiary of SMBC and is growing rapidly as a Centre of Excellence for the bank's universal banking business across EMEA. It provides a range of technology and operational support services, aligned to SMBC's growth, innovation, and transformation strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and execute multiple SQL Server upgrades as part of significant data centre migration projects
  • Oversee the development of SQL Server instances across the global estate, ensuring compliance with best practices and security policies at all times.
  • Monitor the health and performance of the SQL Server environment to minimise downtime and ensure secure, reliable services for end users worldwide.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance database support utilities, scripts, and tools that streamline operational processes and improve system efficiency.
  • Plan for future storage capacity requirements by analysing current usage trends and forecasting organisational needs in collaboration with other technical teams.
  • Establish, document, and uphold best practices and procedures throughout the SQL Server estate to ensure consistency and operational excellence.
  • Provide responsive operational support for critical incidents involving SQL Servers, including code releases and urgent troubleshooting scenarios.
  • Configure and maintain essential SQL Server processes such as monitoring solutions, backup strategies, disaster recovery plans, and performance optimisation routines.
  • Assist application developers with query tuning, schema refinement, and other database-related challenges to promote efficient software delivery.
  • Work independently outside standard business hours when required to deliver upgrades or resolve issues without impacting business continuity.

Key Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience executing complex SQL Server upgrades or migrations within enterprise environments is essential for this role due to upcoming large-scale projects.
  • Proven ability configuring and supporting SQL Server AlwaysOn availability groups for high-availability solutions across distributed systems.
  • Expertise in performance tuning techniques for SQL Server environments including index optimisation, query analysis, and resource management.
  • Comprehensive understanding of patching methodologies and maintenance routines necessary for managing extensive SQL Server estates securely.
  • Practical knowledge of PowerShell scripting is highly desirable as it supports automation initiatives within the team's workflow.
  • In-depth familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server architecture as well as related Windows Server stack components is required for effective administration.
  • Experience working within strict change control frameworks typical of mature process-driven organisations is highly beneficial.
  • ITIL Foundation certification or equivalent service management knowledge demonstrates your commitment to structured IT operations.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills enable you to collaborate effectively with colleagues across regions.
