Role Outline
The Corporate Research department is a global team of over 130 analysts, with the London team having almost 20 members. The critical function of the department is to utilise its industry knowledge to support the development of the bank’s business strategy and provide the best advice and services to the bank’s existing and prospective customers. By providing industry intelligence, advisory support, and value add through creativity in the form of ideas and solutions both internally and externally.
This team is a high-level strategic function, working closely with the upper echelons of the organisation and providing advice to senior management on the credit direction of the existing portfolio and the impact of the markets, regulatory landscape, and industry trends. Their view is sought on major transactions, new products, and markets, providing presentations, analysis, and metrics to support ideas and provide insight into the markets.
In this role as a Senior Analyst, you will help build the bank’s competitive advantage and create new business opportunities through new customers, additional products/services, and transaction support. Analytical input is required to protect the bank’s asset portfolio and is critical for proactive monitoring measures.
As a Senior Analyst, you will be expected to take on responsibility for one of the key sectors in the TMT space in the EMEA region and to co-operate with analysts across the global department. The ideal focus should reflect deep sector knowledge, with particular strength in telecommunications infrastructure where relevant.
The main tasks, delivered mostly independently with limited oversight from Research Leaders, are to drive the bank’s marketing effort by identifying potential customers and transaction support, while simultaneously helping the credit department to protect the bank’s asset portfolio by identifying adverse corporate and industrial trends. The Senior Analyst builds the bank’s reputation and enhances business relationships by providing industry presentations and transactional support to customers.
Your Role
Reporting directly to the Research Leader and expected to assist in drawing up the research strategy for a specific industry sector, notably:
- Producing annual industry strategy for the sector under direct coverage, identifying major trends, business opportunities, corporate strategies, and potential new customers/transactions.
- Producing up to 4 major industry research reports each taking 2–3 months to complete, requiring numerous meetings with external consultants and companies’ management teams, extensive data gathering and analysis, and exploration of new sectors and technologies offering business opportunities for the bank and its customers.
- Producing company strategy reports analysing corporate business models, major opportunities, and key risks for the bank’s existing and new customers, typically with exposures over $100mn.
- Providing transaction analysis input involving credit assessment, including probability of default and covenant breach, and financial analysis supported by deep industry insight and expertise, including revenue and working capital seasonality and contractual payment terms.
- Holding regular meetings, up to 40–50 a year, with senior management of companies, rating agencies, and external consultants, requiring in-depth company and sector analysis to obtain non-public insight into corporate strategies and niche market opportunities.
- Providing high-quality industry research and generating ideas for research topics to help senior staff define the department’s strategy and improve long-term profitability.
- Supporting the bank’s marketing effort by identifying potential customers and supporting the development of new products and services.
- Assessing industry rationale and providing risk/return analysis of corporate transactions by utilising sector expertise and developing statistical and financial models.
- Driving contacts with the bank’s EMEA branches and Tokyo, coordinating transaction and research projects across global departmental operations, and working with multiple Research Leaders and analysts.
- Identifying and attending relevant industry events, including conferences and Capital Market Days, to update industry knowledge and build relations with management teams, consultants, and rating agencies.
- Protecting the bank’s asset portfolio through watch list systems, assessing monitored sectors and restricted exposure, and contributing to the monthly Credit Monitoring System.
- Helping drive adoption of new technology to increase the value of insights, including AI and alternative data analysis.
Your Background
- The ideal candidate will combine, a good understanding of the TMT sector, a deep knowledge of the Telecommunications Infrastructure industry, and the ability to understand and analyse financial statements.
- You will be able to create Financial models and use tools such as Excel, VBA, PowerBi, and Tableau to illustrate your analysis.
- Ability to communicate clearly and succinctly, including drafting well-structured client presentations and industry reports, and making presentations to bank’s clients and internally.
