Laboratory & Workshop Technician
We have an opportunity for a Lab and Workshop Technician to join our thriving global client based in Cambourne, Cambridgeshire. The role is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week (Monday – Friday) initially for 1 year with a possible extension. Our client offers a generous hourly rate of £19.59 - £33.28 per hour depending on experience.

Their product and platform teams are cross-functional and durable, bringing together all the skills required to deliver impactful outcomes. Each team includes a Product Manager, Technology Lead, Product Designer, Delivery Lead, engineers and developers, and solutions must be valuable, viable, usable and feasible. Leadership of the product team is shared between the Product Manager and the Technology Lead, ensuring balanced guidance that bridges product vision and technical execution.
The role is to contribute to the hands-on work of R&D laboratory, workshop and stores area for a product team working on the development of a new connected Agritech product. You will be working with additional R&D technician and lab manager and a team of Product Designers, Mechanical Engineers and Electronic Engineers, you will have a major role in building and and maintaining our setups and test equipment as well as creating test jigs, 3D printing, assembling prototypes (PCBs, sensors and mechanical assemblies), and reporting results using a broad range of modelmaking equipment, latest measurement and mechanical test equipment and prototype PCBA assembly equipment.
The role is part of a multi-site programme, working alongside teams located in California, USA and in Israel.
Duties include
Laboratory, Workshop and Stores:
- Assembling test product/assemblies - Soldering wires and SMD to PCBs, mechanical assembly, programming, calibration, test and monitoring
- 3D printing of jigs and parts for testing
- Contributes to the efficient running of the R&D laboratory, workshop and stores area.
- Implementing improved ways of working in the maintenance, calibration, risk assessments, asset management, stores catalogue, consumables management, operating procedures, COSHH assessments, PPE, Cleanliness, training records, Waste management, and EHS.
- Calibration and service/inspection of all laboratory and workshop equipment
- Purchase of materials, fixings and fastenings, consumables, capital equipment and tools
- Developing & improving the laboratory and test capability to meet future project needs
- Collaborating with external test houses, vendors and suppliers where required
Testing:
- Design and build test setups for system integration testing and functional testing of the product
- Collaborating with the engineers on test related project work.
- Designing and developing test rigs.
- Executing lab tests by the use of measurement equipment and software tools
- Using Draw.IO, Visio, PowerPoint, Word and Excel to document test findings in formal test reports and in presentations
Skills and Experience:
Mandatory:
- Demonstrable, relevant experience as a test or development technician for electro-mechanical products
- Strong hands-on expertise with hardware systems, embedded interfaces, networks, instrumentation, debugging, and system-level integration.
- Ability to focus on what's important.
- Organized and able to work well in a structured process environment
- Strong desire for learning and innovation.

- Good verbal & written communication Skills.
Advantage:
- Experience with RF communication and connected (smart) products
- Experience of working in complex multidisciplinary projects that requires a high level of technical know-how
- Experience with manufacturing databases, production data pipelines, and engineering data analysis tools.
- Experience with hardware communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, or similar embedded and instrumentation interfaces.
- Experience working with subcontractors, external vendors, CMO production teams, and procurement processes for tester or prototype parts.
Qualifications & Education:
Mandatory:
- Diploma in engineering/technician or equivalent
Advantage:
- B.Sc Electronics Engineering, B.Eng or similar
