Job summary

As a Data Scientist at Royal Cornwall Hospitals, you will be responsible for the production and reporting of advanced analytics to support executive, strategic and operational decision making in the delivery of the many services the trust provides. Drawing on your expertise with statistical modelling, you will identify patterns in our data, developing forecasts and predictive tools which capture essential features of service dynamics.

The Information and Business Intelligence Department carries out an essential role in the Trust; producing a wide range of healthcare related information reports and analysis, to support direct patient care and improved health outcomes for patients. Our team underpin evidence-based decision making, for both operational managers and Clinicians. We support the operational day to day management of the hospitals, transformation and Quality Improvement projects, as well as performance management for both internal and national monitoring purposes. Our reporting tools are considered to be business critical, and are delivered via our Trust BI tool, RADAR. You will be joining a team with a well-known profile across the Trust, who are known for being proactive, knowledgeable and always deliver.

Main duties of the job

You will work within the Data Science function supporting the Senior Data Scientist and key stakeholders through the use of data analytics and modelling. You will be part of an enthusiastic and technically minded team, using your data science skillset to tackle challenges facing critical public services. You will use data science methodologies and techniques to model and analyse a range of healthcare information, and confidently present complex findings to non-technical audiences. The ideal candidate will have experience with:

  • Machine learning, Forecasting, Discrete Event Simulation, and multivariate statistics
  • Demand and capacity planning in a healthcare environment
  • Analytical approaches to performance management
  • Excellent teamworking and communication

The job is specialised in terms of the technical capabilities required of the post holder and the ability to develop skills and experience in the following would be considered core requisites to undertake the role:

  • SQL
  • Python (e.g. Pandas, SciKit Learn)
  • AI/Machine Learning
  • PowerBI
  • SSIS / SSRS
  • R
  • Microsoft SQL Server (multiple versions)

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • Degree in data science, operational research, data analytics or similar discipline
  • Computing related qualification.
Desirable
  • Proven Evidence of postgraduate study in numerate/ informatics subject
  • Certificate in Management or equivalent.

Experience

Essential
  • Experience in multiple modelling techniques including discrete event simulation, machine learning, forecasting, and multivariate statistics.
  • Proven knowledge of Python/R Studio coding
  • Significant experience in the use of SQL
  • Experience of working effectively in a team and collaboratively across departments/organisations
  • Ability to interpret complex and often ambiguous guidance to deliver reporting requirements.
Desirable
  • Demonstrable NHS Acute Trust experience in an analytical role.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience of business intelligence software both from a customer and technical viewpoint (particularly SharePoint and the Microsoft BI stack).

Skills & Knowledge

Essential
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including presenting complex information to large groups of staff
  • Excellent numerical and statistical skills
  • Able to adapt to new software and programming languages.
  • Ability to explain analytical/complex concepts to lay persons.
  • Ability to work under own initiative to deliver agreed objectives with minimal managerial supervision and lead on specialist projects when given outline brief.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines, constantly changing priorities and pressure.
  • Ability to create networks effectively and develop a range of contacts that will support in the delivery of own key objectives.
