An exciting opportunity has arisen for an emerging leader to fulfil the role of Band 7 ward manager for The Coleman Unit & Adult Day Surgery Unit at RNOH fast-paced unit
As the ward manager for The Coleman Unit & Adult Day Surgery Unit, you will lead a skilled nursing team, work closely with the matron and be part of a large specialist multidisciplinary team. We have an international reputation for providing high quality care to all our patients in different specialities.
You will need initiative, energy, tenacity, imagination and empathy to fulfil this demanding role. You will be joining an experienced and committed team in an organisation intent on achieving the best staff and patient experience of any provider nationally. As a specialist centre, we ensure that all our wards have good staffing levels and our ward managers are supervisory to practice. You will be supported by the Matron, the practice education team and professional nurse advocates.

Main duties of the job
The Ward Manager is accountable for the day to day running of the ward and leads the nursing team. The post holder will be expected:
- To demonstrate digital competence and actively contribute to the Trust's digital strategy. This includes promoting the effective use of Epic EHR, ensuring high quality electronic documentation, maintaining information governance standards, and supporting colleagues in developing digital capability."
- Act as a role model and leader to nursing staff-be Highly visible and have Clinical days/shifts on the ward.
- Be responsible for the provision of clinical care and standards on the ward.
- Be responsible for coordinating and make effective use of staff, supervise staff and ensure training is maintained.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels and provide clinical leadership for staff.
- Ensure cost effective use of resources
- Ensure the ward provides an effective and supportive learning environment for all learners.
- Participate in the Nursing Leadership Forum and wider professional activities across the Trust

Clinical Responsibilities;
Clinical days on the ward
Assess care needs for patients, planning, implementing and evaluating care for individual patients.
Ensure nursing care is delivered in a holistic manner using an individualized approach.
Ensure that all patients receive a high standard of nursing care.
Co-ordinate the admission and discharge planning process in conjunction with the Access and Discharge Co-ordinator and the multi-disciplinary team.
Discuss with patients/ carers and relatives any problems or changes relating to planned care and treatment.
Ensure that all patient documentation is accurate and comprehensive.
Ensure the safe custody and safe administration of medicines and report any discrepancies.
Leadership and Management Responsibilities
Be an active member of the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring good communication with other departments internally and externally.
Utilise staffing resources to provide the most effective cover for the ward.
Plan staff off-duty, ensuring appropriate skill mix for each shift.

Promote and initiate innovations and change related to improvement of clinical services.
Educational Responsibilities
Contribute towards educational training programmes for staff.
Ensure that all new staff receive induction and orientation to the department and Trust.
Teach and supervise staff.
Maintain links with the appropriate Universities via the link tutors
Maintain, support, monitor, participate and implement the professional and personal development of self and ward staff through the Individual Performance Review and RNOH Appraisal policy.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- RN1, on the NMC register
- Mentorship / Teaching & assessing qualification
- Post registration course/equivalent experience: Cancer Care / Orthopaedics / Spinal Cord Injury
- Diploma / Degree
- ALS
- Management qualification
Knowledge/training/experience
- Minimum of 4 years post registration experience
- Minimum of 2 years' experience at Band 6 in a relevant speciality
- Staff management and supervision experience
- Experience of leading and managing teams through service change.
- Experience of using Electronic Health Records (EHR) in clinical practice.
- Experience of working with Epic EHR.
- Experience supporting digital transformation or EHR implementation programmes
- Understanding of digital transformation programmes within the NHS.
Communication & Relationship Skills
- Able to manage challenging situations effectively
- Partnership and collaborative working with internal and external stakeholders
- Proven communication skills (written, non-verbal & verbal)
- Understanding of Quality Initiative programmes (QI)
- Ability to adapt to changing service needs.
Planning, Analytical & Judgment Skills
