Apprentice Medical Receptionist

We are looking for a friendly, motivated and reliable Apprentice Medical Receptionist to join our GP practice team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is keen to develop their skills and gain valuable experience within a busy healthcare environment.

Role

The Apprentice Medical Receptionist will work as part of the practice reception and administration team. They will receive full training and gradually take on more responsibility as their confidence and skills develop.

Their duties will include:

  • Welcoming patients into the practice and providing a friendly, professional service.
  • Answering telephone calls and dealing with patient enquiries.
  • Booking, cancelling and rearranging appointments.
  • Signposting patients to the most appropriate service or healthcare professional.
  • Registering new patients and updating patient information.
  • Using the practice computer systems, including SystmOne, to access and update records.
  • Processing incoming and outgoing correspondence.
  • Supporting clinicians and other members of the practice team with administrative tasks.
  • Taking messages and passing information to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Managing requests from patients in line with practice procedures.
  • Scanning and filing documents accurately.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality and following GDPR and information governance requirements.
  • Learning about NHS services and how a GP practice operates.
  • Supporting the wider team with general administrative and reception duties.

As an apprentice, they will not be expected to know everything from day one. They will learn on the job, receive support from experienced colleagues and attend their apprenticeship training alongside their normal work.

Training

The apprentice will receive a combination of on-the-job training within the GP practice and off-the-job training with the apprenticeship training provider.

The apprentice will work alongside experienced members of the reception and administration team, receiving supervised training and support to develop the knowledge and skills required for the role. Training will include patient communication, appointment booking, NHS processes, confidentiality and GDPR, use of practice systems, administration and customer service.

The apprentice will also attend off-the-job apprenticeship training with the training provider, with the frequency and arrangements agreed as part of the apprenticeship programme. Time will be provided during working hours to complete the required apprenticeship training and coursework.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, there may be an opportunity to progress into a permanent Medical Receptionist role, subject to vacancies and satisfactory performance.
