Senior Marine Electronics Project Engineer

SYR are seeking an experienced Senior Marine Electronics Project Engineer to join a growing marine engineering client of ours based on the south coast.

This is a senior technical role suited to someone who enjoys taking ownership of complex projects, solving challenging engineering problems and working closely with colleagues, clients and industry partners to deliver high-quality results.

This is not a people-management position. You will work alongside and support more junior engineers, providing technical guidance and mentoring, while formal team leadership, performance management and resource planning remain with the Engineering Manager.

The Role

As a Senior Marine Electronics Project Engineer, you will be responsible for the technical delivery of complex marine electronics projects from initial concept and design through installation, commissioning and ongoing support.

You will act as the technical lead on assigned projects, ensuring work is delivered to a high standard, engineering documentation is accurate and projects are completed effectively and professionally.

You will also play an important role in supporting and mentoring less experienced engineers, sharing technical knowledge and contributing to a collaborative, high-performing engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery

  • Lead the technical delivery of assigned marine electronics projects.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and in accordance with agreed specifications.
  • Identify technical risks and resolve issues before they impact project delivery.
  • Manage project documentation, milestones and engineering records.
  • Support installation, commissioning, testing and fault-finding activities both remotely and on-site.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, manufacturers, suppliers and other project stakeholders.

Design & Documentation

  • Produce professional technical drawing packs and engineering documentation.
  • Develop and maintain accurate schematics, layouts and system documentation.
  • Ensure documentation meets required standards and supports future servicing and maintenance.
  • Contribute to the continual improvement of engineering processes and documentation standards.

Technical Leadership

  • Act as the lead technical authority on assigned projects.
  • Maintain high standards of engineering quality and technical delivery.
  • Support quality assurance activities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Work closely with manufacturers and suppliers to identify and implement effective technical solutions.
  • Identify opportunities for system improvements, upgrades and additional works.

Mentoring & Teamwork

  • Support and mentor junior engineers through day-to-day project activities.
  • Share technical knowledge and experience across the wider engineering team.
  • Contribute to project reviews, technical discussions and lessons learned.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across engineering, operations and administration.

Client Engagement

  • Build strong working relationships with owners' representatives, captains, management companies, shipyards and other project stakeholders.
  • Communicate confidently and professionally with clients throughout project delivery.
  • Provide clear technical updates and manage expectations effectively.
  • Represent the organisation professionally and maintain a consistently high standard of client service.

Essential Experience & Skills

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Significant experience delivering marine electronics projects.
  • Strong knowledge of modern marine electrical and electronic systems.
  • Experience producing professional technical drawing packs and engineering documentation.
  • Experience integrating, commissioning and troubleshooting complex marine systems.
  • The ability to independently manage the technical delivery of projects.
  • Strong planning, organisational and communication skills.
  • Experience working directly with clients and other project stakeholders.
  • A practical, methodical approach to problem-solving with excellent attention to detail.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • The willingness to travel when required, occasionally at short notice.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience working on large yacht refit or new-build projects.
  • Knowledge of network infrastructure and vessel integration systems.
  • Experience with navigation, communications and instrumentation systems.
  • Experience with remote diagnostics and technical support technologies.
  • Experience working with a range of leading marine electronics manufacturers.

The Person We're Looking For

Technical ability is essential, but attitude and cultural fit are equally important.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Takes ownership and follows through on commitments.
  • Enjoys solving complex technical challenges.
  • Maintains high standards of workmanship and technical documentation.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with clients and colleagues.
  • Enjoys mentoring and supporting less experienced engineers.
  • Is collaborative, approachable and team-oriented.
  • Takes pride in delivering a high-quality end result.
  • Values continuous learning and professional development.
  • Understands that exceptional project outcomes are achieved through teamwork rather than individual effort.

A Note on Culture

We are looking for a team player first and foremost.

This is an environment where collaboration, knowledge sharing and supporting colleagues are highly valued. We are not looking for someone who prefers to work in isolation or operate as a lone-wolf engineer.

Instead, we are looking for an experienced technical professional who enjoys being part of a high-performing team, is willing to share knowledge and takes an active interest in helping colleagues develop.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to work on technically demanding marine projects involving sophisticated electronics and vessel systems, while continuing to develop your expertise within the marine sector.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Work on challenging marine electronics projects.
  • Develop specialist technical expertise across a range of vessel systems.
  • Work with leading marine technology manufacturers and innovative equipment.
  • Take ownership of meaningful projects and have a visible impact on their delivery.
  • Share knowledge with and learn from experienced marine engineering professionals.
  • Support the development of junior engineers.
  • Work within a supportive, ambitious and collaborative technical team.
  • Continue progressing your career while maintaining a strong work-life balance.
