SC Cleared Service Designer (Mid-Senior) - Central Government (Contract)
Duration: ASAP start for an initial 6 months
Rate: Up To £585 per day (Inside IR35)
Location: Remote working with occasional onsite attendance
Clearance: UKSV SC (active)

We are seeking a mid-senior level SC Cleared Service Designer to support a UK Central Government department on a complex, user-centred digital transformation programme. This Inside IR35 engagement requires a practitioner who can operate with minimal supervision, lead service design activity, and influence stakeholders across delivery teams.

The Role

You will take ownership of service design activity across one or more services, shaping end-to-end experiences that meet user needs, business objectives, and government standards. The role sits at mid-senior level, requiring confidence working autonomously while guiding teams through service design best practice.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the design of end-to-end services across complex public sector environments

  • Producing and owning service blueprints, journey maps, and system maps

  • Applying GDS standards and service design principles across discovery, Alpha, beta, and live

  • Facilitating workshops and design sessions with senior stakeholders and delivery teams

  • Translating user research, policy constraints, and operational needs into actionable service improvements

  • Collaborating closely with product, research, content, and engineering colleagues

  • Supporting teams through service assessments and assurance activities

  • Clearly articulating design rationale and influencing decision-making at programme level


About You

Essential experience:

  • Active UKSV SC clearance

  • Strong experience operating as a Service Designer at mid-senior level

  • Proven background delivering services within UK Central Government or similarly regulated environments

  • Deep understanding of GDS standards and the Service Manual

  • Experience leading service design work within agile, multidisciplinary teams

  • Confident engaging and influencing senior stakeholders

  • Comfortable working remotely with occasional onsite attendance

Nice to Have:

  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior designers

  • Exposure to large-scale transformation or complex, multi-channel services

  • Strong understanding of accessibility and inclusive design

  • Experience working closely with policy and operational teams
