Hardware and Electronics Engineer

Hardware and Electronics Engineer Location: Bristol Clearance Requirement: Must be eligible for DV clearance (British Citizen, UK residency for the last 10 years)

Overview

Are you passionate about building hardware from the ground up? This hands-on role involves designing and prototyping custom electronic devices that support real-world operations. You'll work closely with embedded developers and end-users to take projects from schematic to functional product, including PCB design, wireless module integration, enclosure fabrication, and testing.

What You'll Do
  • Design and build custom circuits using COTS modules and discrete components

  • Create PCB layouts using tools like Altium or EasyEDA

  • Integrate wireless technologies (RF, GPS, GSM, Bluetooth, UWB)

  • Design and 3D print enclosures for your hardware

  • Assemble and test prototypes, including soldering (SMD and through-hole)

  • Collaborate with embedded software developers to ensure full system integration

  • Document builds, iterations, and configurations

  • Support on-site integration, testing, and refinement with end-users

What You'll Bring

Essential:

  • Hands-on experience designing and assembling electronics

  • Proficiency in PCB layout tools and soldering

  • Familiarity with wireless communication modules (RF, GPS, Bluetooth, etc.)

  • Exposure to microcontroller platforms (e.g., Arduino, ESP32, STM32)

  • Skilled with lab tools: multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers

  • Ability to rapidly build and iterate on functional prototypes

  • Knowledge of mechanical enclosure design and 3D printing

Desirable:

  • Experience producing small runs of PCB prototypes

  • Understanding of power management in battery-operated or low-power devices

  • Awareness of EMI/EMC considerations in hardware design

  • Experience supporting field testing or operational deployment

  • Interest in DIY/maker electronics projects

Education & Qualifications
  • Degree or HND in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar

  • Relevant personal or project-based experience is highly valued, including hobbyist work
