Infrastructure Operations Engineer, VMWare, Automation, Hybrid Hybrid Working - 2 days on site Long term contract

We're seeking an Infrastructure Operations Engineer to join a large-scale enterprise technology environment, supporting critical infrastructure services that underpin business operations. This role offers the opportunity to work across complex server, virtualisation and platform technologies, driving operational excellence, security, automation and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining the reliability, performance and security of production infrastructure whilst supporting ongoing modernisation and optimisation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operation, administration and support of enterprise server and virtualised infrastructure environments.
  • Coordinate and deliver regular operating system and application patching activities.
  • Identify, assess and remediate infrastructure and application vulnerabilities in line with security requirements.
  • Drive automation initiatives to improve efficiency, consistency and service reliability.
  • Support infrastructure lifecycle management, including upgrades, refreshes and decommissioning activities.
  • Monitor system performance, availability and capacity, proactively addressing issues before service impact occurs.
  • Lead infrastructure-related incident resolution, root cause analysis and problem management activities.
  • Coordinate infrastructure, network and firewall changes through established governance processes.
  • Maintain technical documentation, operational procedures and support runbooks.
  • Collaborate with security, cloud, network, application and database teams to ensure stable and secure service delivery.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across infrastructure operations, automation and security.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server and/or Linux administration within enterprise environments.
  • Automation and scripting using PowerShell, Bash or Python.
  • Experience managing virtualised infrastructure technologies, including VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, OpenShift or similar platforms.
  • Good understanding of patch management, software lifecycle management and vulnerability remediation.
  • Knowledge of enterprise networking concepts, including DNS, DHCP, firewalls, load balancing and network security principles.
  • Experience working within structured change management and governance frameworks.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across both technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
  • Familiarity with hybrid infrastructure environments that include both on-premises and cloud-based platforms.
