  • Rate: £500-£600/day

Java Developer - UK Government Digital Services (Contract)

We're looking for an exceptional Java Developer to join a high-performing Agile team delivering one of the most ambitious digital transformation programmes in UK Government.

As part of the Department for Work and Pension's flagship welfare reform initiative, you'll work alongside Developers, Designers, and Analysts in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. You'll be solving complex problems, building scalable platforms, and delivering innovative technology that brings genuine value to users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and improve digital products and services across government platforms
  • Develop robust APIs for internal and external use
  • Contribute to large-scale micro service architectures
  • Write clean, testable code using Java 21+, TDD, and BDD
  • Collaborate through pair programming and Agile ceremonies
  • Support continuous deployment with automated test suites
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences
  • Participate in 2nd-line support, including occasional out-of-hours coverage
  • Stay engaged with the wider development community and share best practices

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience with Java 21 or later
  • Solid understanding of TDD and BDD methodologies
  • Proven track record in Agile environments
  • Experience with micro services, API development, and Unix-like systems
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and techniques
  • Familiarity with Responsive Web Design principles

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of Jackson, JAX-RS, Mockito, ActiveMQ/Kafka
  • Experience with MongoDB or other document databases
  • Background in high-traffic websites and large data sets
