Fabric Engineer - Fully Remote (UK) - Outside IR35

A leading consultancy is looking to engage an accomplished Senior Consultant for a high‐impact data and analytics programme. This role suits a seasoned specialist in data engineering, Microsoft Fabric, and solution delivery, with the ability to design, build and refine technical solutions that elevate existing data products.

The successful consultant will play a key role as a subject matter expert, collaborating closely with senior project stakeholders and contributing to the delivery of a robust, scalable data platform.

Role Overview

This position focuses on architecting and engineering data solutions within a Microsoft Fabric environment. The consultant will be responsible for transforming ingested data, documenting business logic, and building insightful Power BI dashboards for management reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement technical solutions within the agreed Microsoft Fabric scope.
  • Develop and enhance transformations for all ingested data sources.
  • Document data logic, workflows, and transformation steps clearly and comprehensively.
  • Build Power BI dashboards that surface meaningful insights for leadership teams.
  • Offer specialist expertise in engineering and solution delivery.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience delivering data engineering solutions at senior or consultant level.
  • Strong hands‐on knowledge of Microsoft Fabric components:
  • Notebooks, Delta tables, Fabric SQL
  • Lakehouse / OneLake concepts
  • Deep experience writing PySpark in Fabric notebooks, including:
  • Reading/writing Delta, schema evolution, partitioning, optimisation
  • Solid understanding and implementation experience of SCD2 and other slowly changing dimension techniques.
  • Proficiency in building production‐ready Power BI models and dashboards, with a solid grasp of Import vs DirectQuery approaches.
  • Knowledge of ETL orchestration patterns, CI/CD pipelines (DevOps/Git), and development best practice.
  • Strong problem‐solving ability, documentation skills, and clear stakeholder communication.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience working with IVU (transport scheduling) or iTrent (HR/Payroll) data.
  • Familiarity with the wider Azure ecosystem: ADLS/Blob, Azure SQL DB, Managed Identity, Key Vault.
  • Exposure to observability tooling, metric/logging strategies, or Terraform for automated infrastructure provisioning.
  • Experience converting exploratory notebooks into production-grade jobs.
