The Senior Mapping Engineer role

This is a senior, hands-on engineering role where you will take ownership of the mapping capability within a wider autonomy stack. You will work across the full lifecycle - from architecture and algorithm design through to production deployment and long-term optimisation.

You will collaborate closely with perception and localisation teams to ensure mapping outputs are accurate, robust and production-ready. The role offers meaningful influence over tooling, standards, scalability decisions and long-term product direction.

Key responsibilities

* Design and evolve scalable LiDAR and vision-based mapping pipelines* Develop and optimise 2D and 3D map representations, including occupancy grids, HD maps and semantic layers* Lead multi-sensor fusion across LiDAR, cameras, radar, GNSS/INS and odometry* Support multi-session, large-scale and distributed mapping workflows* Implement map versioning, incremental updates and deployment strategies* Define KPIs and validation frameworks to ensure accuracy and consistency* Translate SLAM and large-scale reconstruction research into robust production systems* Mentor engineers and contribute to technical best practice across the autonomy function

Senior Mapping Engineer essential skills

* MSc or PhD in Robotics, Computer Vision, Computer Science or a related discipline* 4-5+ years' commercial experience in mapping for robotics or autonomous systems* Strong LiDAR and point cloud processing expertise (PCL, Open3D or custom C++ pipelines)* Experience in vision-based mapping, including stereo or mono reconstruction and visual SLAM* Proven background in multi-sensor fusion* Experience building and deploying large-scale 3D maps in real-world environments* Strong C++ development skills with solid ROS2 experience* Strong understanding of kinematics, estimation, optimisation, geometry and transformation management (TF2)

Desirable experience includes semantic mapping, distributed systems, DDS middleware and ML-driven scene understanding.

This role would suit a senior engineer who enjoys solving complex spatial problems, influencing architectural direction and seeing their work deployed in live autonomy systems.
