Senior Software Engineer
(Secure Systems | DevSecOps | Mission-Critical Platforms)
Gloucester, Manchester or London, UK
£50,000 – £80,000 base salary (dependent on experience)
Bonus + benefits + long-term progression
Full-time, permanent | 37 hours per week | Predominantly site-based
Location & Eligibility
This role is based on secure UK sites in Gloucester, Manchester, or London.
Applicants must be able to work on-site regularly due to security constraints.
You must already hold Developed Vetting (eDV) clearance.
Applications without eDV will not be considered.
Applicants must have full UK work eligibility. Visa sponsorship is not available.
Overview
We are recruiting a Senior Software Engineer to join a highly experienced engineering function delivering secure, mission-critical software systems for defence, intelligence, and national security customers.
You will work as part of a cross-functional Agile team, contributing to the design, build, deployment, and support of complex software platforms operating in security-constrained environments.
This is a hands-on senior engineering role, but we are open to candidates across a range of seniority levels. The role can flex to suit strong individual contributors or engineers looking to take on greater technical leadership and ownership within delivery teams.
The work spans DevSecOps at scale, cloud-enabled platforms, data-driven systems, and emerging technologies including AI, ML, cyber, and geospatial intelligence.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build robust, secure software using industry best practices
- Contribute to the full software lifecycle within Agile delivery teams
- Collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and stakeholders
- Deliver against project milestones and technical objectives
- Influence technical direction and design decisions within your team
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices, tooling, and quality
- Support deployment and operation of software in secure environments
- Experience working within Agile software delivery teams
- Java development experience (ideally Spring Boot)
- Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, Vue, etc.)
- Experience building enterprise-scale web applications or services
- Cloud platform experience (AWS and/or Azure)
- Containerisation and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes
- Unit testing and automated testing practices
- Familiarity with structured and unstructured data storage
- Experience using code repositories, branching strategies, pull requests, and CI workflows
- MongoDB or other NoSQL databases
- Apache Kafka or event-driven architectures
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, etc.)
- Data visualisation techniques and tooling
- DevSecOps tooling and secure delivery pipelines
- Experience in defence, intelligence, cyber, or other highly regulated domains
- £50,000 – £80,000 base salary, dependent on experience and seniority
