Machine Learning Engineer - Paid Placement

SeeByte, the global leader in developing smart software solutions for uncrewed maritime systems, are looking for several Student Research Engineers to join their team in their Bristol office.

As part of a world renowned, expert engineering team, you will be working with state-of-the-art software systems for the management of uncrewed systems software. This is a fantastic opportunity to work for an innovative and forward-thinking company with an international client base.

What will you be working on:

You will be working on developing a prototype that addresses a real-world problem found in the maritime domain. This will start with an investigate phase where you will be conducting research into the problem, identify relevant technologies and propose a solution. Whilst developing the prototype, you will have the opportunity to present findings and gain feedback from industry experts.

The successful applicants will be expected to develop novel algorithms by leveraging concepts such as machine learning, optimisation and mathematical modelling. They will also be using Python and common libraries (e.g. NumPy, Tensorflow, SciPy) to develop their prototype.

Problems you could be working on:

  • Enhancing sonar operator training using data-driven techniques
  • Investigating the use of ML (e.g. generative models, differentiable rendering) to replicate a real sonar system by augmenting a sonar simulator
  • Digital assistant for data analysis
  • Developing a tool to make data analysis techniques accessible through natural language processing and semantic search
  • Smart decision-making aid to assist with acoustic marine mammal tracking
  • Leveraging optimisation algorithms and data-driven simulations to identify optimal configurations for acoustic monitoring arrays
  • Short range marine mammal warning system for marine vessels
  • Developing an automated system for detecting marine mammals at close range via deep learning

Experience in the following areas are desirable:

  • Keen interest in technologies for algorithm development
  • Machine Learning/AI
  • Mathematical Optimisation
  • Reinforcement Learning
  • Experience in developing applications in Python
  • Practical use of common Python libraries for data analysis or ML (e.g. NumPy, Tensorflow, SciPy, Scikit-Learn)

What you will gain whilst working at SeeByte:

  • Experience in applying technologies (e.g. neural networks, probabilistic models, constraint programming) to solve real world problems.
  • Sharpened intuition in identifying and working towards personal and company objectives.
  • The ability to collaborate with engineers of various backgrounds, communicating ideas and integrating within the organisational structure.
  • Experience in applying engineering processes to analyse problems, evaluate solutions and delivering excellence.
  • Gaining valuable experience working in a commercial software company providing state-of-the-art solutions worldwide

Benefits include:

  • Dedicated supervisor to mentor and to assist throughout the internship
  • 3 days in office/2 home working policy
  • Clear development, training and mentoring opportunities
  • Learn software engineering skills from world experts in the field of maritime robotics, command and control and sensor processing.
