Senior Digital, Data & Infrastructure Engineer
Job summary
The post holder will provide specialist digital, data and infrastructure engineering expertise to support business intelligence, reporting, analytics and insight across the South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw CancerAlliance.
The post holder will develop, implement and maintain secure, reliable and scalable data solutions, data pipelines and supporting technical infrastructure that enable the effective delivery of cancer informationand intelligence services across the Cancer Alliance.
Main duties of the job
Working within agreed organisational strategies, technical frameworks, architecture standards and governance arrangements, the post holder will apply specialist knowledge of data engineering, cloud technologies, data integration and business intelligence platforms to support the delivery of technical solutions that meet operational, analytical and reporting requirements.
The post holder will translate business and information requirements into technical specifications and support the development of solutions that ensure cancer data from multiple sources is integrated, managed and made available for reporting, analysis and decision-making purposes.
The role requires specialist knowledge of data engineering, cloud platforms, data modelling, data integration, digital infrastructure and NHS information standards, acquired through degree-level study, equivalent specialist training and significant practical experience.
The post holder will work collaboratively with colleagues across the Cancer Alliance, South Yorkshire ICB, NHS provider organisations and partner agencies to support the ongoing development of moderndata and analytics capabilities and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
The post holder will exercise professional judgement in resolving complex technical issues, adapting established approaches where appropriate and working within agreed policies, procedures and technical standards.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in a technical, digital, data engineering or computing discipline.
- Strong understanding of modern cloud based data platforms and how data engineering and platform design support large scale analytics and intelligence delivery.
- Significant equivalent experience in NHS or public sector digital or data platform roles.
- Postgraduate qualification in computer science, data engineering, cloud computing or related field.
- Relevant professional certifications (e.g. cloud, data platform, infrastructure or security).
Experience
- Significant experience designing, building and operating data platforms or data engineering solutions.
- Experience of working across organisational boundaries in complex systems.
- Leading technical workstreams or platform components.
- Experience with data integration, modelling, validation and performance optimisation.
- Working with senior stakeholders to deliver technical solutions that meet strategic needs.
- Experience of health or care data environments.
- Experience supporting large scale, multi organisation platforms.
- Experience managing infrastructure services or technical suppliers.
- Experience enabling governed self service access to data.
Skills and Knowledge
- Strong data engineering skills, including t-sql and spark spark sql; fabric or data factory pipelines; fabric notebook; data flows and data modelling.
- Understanding of cloud data architectures, platform services and infrastructure concepts.
- Experience designing secure, well governed data solutions.
- Strong problem solving and systems thinking capability.
- Excellent technical communication and documentation skills.
- Practical experience with Microsoft Fabric, including data pipelines, Lakehouse/Warehouse concepts, semantic models or Power BI integration.
- Programming or orchestration tools (e.g. Python, DAX, Azure).
- Knowledge of NHS data governance and information standards.
