Full-Stack Developer (12 month FTC/Secondment)

An established digital media organisation is seeking a Full-Stack Developer to join a forward-thinking newsroom technology team. This role combines news storytelling with technical innovation , enabling the delivery of interactive, data-rich, and visually compelling experiences for audiences across multiple platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain front-end applications for web-based news platforms using modern JavaScript frameworks such as React.js, Redux, and D3 .
  • Design and implement interactive data visualisations , microsites, and editorial tools used in digital reporting.
  • Rapidly prototype ideas using lean and test-driven methodologies .
  • Ensure high code quality with a focus on security, performance, and maintainability .
  • Collaborate closely with editorial, design, and backend teams to bring impactful stories to life.
  • Contribute to the technical strategy , evaluating and implementing the most effective tools and frameworks.
  • Participate in the full lifecycle of digital projects—from concept to deployment.

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong proficiency with JavaScript (ES6/ES7) and libraries such as React , Redux , and D3 .
  • Experience in Node.js and common tools like npm , webpack , etc.
  • Understanding of cloud-based deployments (preferably using GCP or AWS) and serverless architectures .
  • Familiarity with test frameworks such as Mocha , Cypress , and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., CircleCI).
  • Solid grasp of Git , JIRA , and modern Agile development workflows.
  • Knowledge of web performance optimization , security best practices , and responsive design principles.
  • Bonus: Experience with Python or R for data processing, and a working knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases .
  • Comfort working in a Unix/Linux environment .
  • A genuine interest in current affairs and news media .

The Team

You’ll be working within a multi-disciplinary editorial technology unit that blends investigative journalism , data analysis , and digital storytelling . The team combines skills in satellite imagery, open-source intelligence, and data visualisation to build narratives that are both transparent and impactful.

You'll have a key role in supporting storytelling projects that rely on clarity, accuracy, and engaging user experiences.
