Senior Software Developer

We need another developer.

Soar Tech builds cloud-based banking software for credit unions and community lenders across the UK. If you're not sure what a credit union is, it's basically a community-owned alternative to a bank. They exist to help their members, not to make shareholders rich. Our software is what makes that possible at scale.

We're a small team based in Scotland. That's not a euphemism for "under-resourced startup running on fumes." We're profitable, we have paying clients who depend on us, and we're building something that genuinely matters.

What you'd actually be doing

A bit of everything, honestly. In any given week you might be:

  • Building new features in Node.js and React/Next.js
  • Wrangling MongoDB aggregation pipelines until they behave
  • Managing AWS infrastructure (EC2, S3, CloudFront and friends)
  • Helping a client work through a support query
  • Reviewing code that Claude wrote at 3am (metaphorically, it doesn't sleep)
  • Occasionally swearing at a deployment pipeline

This isn't a role where you sit in a narrow lane and do one thing. It's a role where you own things end to end, and your decisions have a direct impact on real people and real communities. If that sounds exhausting, fair enough. If it sounds exciting, keep reading.

How we build things

We've gone all in on AI-assisted development. Claude Code is a core part of our daily workflow. Not as a gimmick or an experiment, but as a genuine part of how we ship software. We write prompts, we review what comes back, we iterate, and we know when to throw it away and write something by hand instead.

We're looking for someone who already works this way. If you've been using Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot or similar tools in anger on real projects, and you've developed a feel for when AI helps and when it gets in the way, that's exactly the profile we want.

The stack

  • Node.js and TypeScript across the full stack
  • React and Next.js on the front end
  • MongoDB Atlas, including aggregation pipelines and change streams
  • AWS (EC2, S3, CloudFront, Lightsail et al.)
  • Claude Code as a daily development tool
  • ISO 27001:2022 compliance (because fintech)

What we're looking for

  • Solid experience with Node.js. You've built things that are running in production somewhere.
  • Comfortable with cloud infrastructure. You don't panic when you need to SSH into a box and figure out what's gone wrong.
  • Experience with MongoDB or similar document databases.
  • Genuine fluency with AI-assisted development. We don't mean "I've tried Copilot." We mean you've built real things with these tools and you've got opinions about how to use them well.
  • The ability to read, understand and critically review code, whether written by a human or generated by AI.
  • A pragmatic mindset. We care about things working reliably, not about architectural perfection for its own sake.
  • Good communication. You'll be talking to clients sometimes, and you'll need to raise concerns or suggest improvements without being asked.

Nice to have (but genuinely optional)

  • Experience in financial services or a regulated environment
  • Familiarity with open banking APIs and payment systems
  • Interest in building AI capabilities into the product itself
  • Experience with Next.js specifically

What's in it for you

  • £45,000 – £60,000 depending on experience
  • Remote working, Scotland-based (Central belt preferred so we can meet up easily)
  • 33 days' annual leave inclusive of public holidays, plus a day off for your birthday
  • Private medical insurance
  • Opportunities to attend conferences and industry events. We're active in the credit union and fintech space, and we think it's important that the team gets out from behind their screens occasionally.
  • A small team where there's nowhere to hide, in the best possible way. Your work matters here.

And finally

We're not going to pretend this is a perfect job for everyone. Support is part of the role. The infrastructure is complex. You won't always be working on the most glamorous thing. Some weeks you'll be deep in a gnarly data migration and wondering what you've done with your life.

But you'll also get to shape a product that helps communities across the UK access fair financial services. You'll have genuine autonomy and ownership. And you'll work with people who care about doing good work without taking themselves too seriously.
