Job Description
A growing technology team is changing how software is built and used across a nationwide retail business.AI is already supporting customer enquiries, call transcription, document processing and internal development. The next step is to apply it more widely, while improving the underlying products and processes that support the business.This is a hands-on software engineering role for someone who wants to understand real operational problems, help shape the solution and see it through to production.AI Product EngineerRemote, UK£40,000 to £60,000You will work remotely, with regular opportunities to spend time at one of the company's stores or vehicle preparation centres. Living within practical travelling distance of a site would therefore be useful.The opportunityThe business operates a growing network of used car supermarkets, supported by its own technology covering stock, pricing, sales, customer communications and internal operations.Its engineers use agentic coding tools such as Claude Code as a normal part of software development. These tools are used to build and deliver working products, not simply to autocomplete code.You will work with teams across sales, customer care, finance, logistics and vehicle preparation to understand how work currently gets done. You will then help decide what should be improved, what should be built and whether AI is genuinely the right solution.The immediate focus is likely to include improving how customer leads are managed across telephone, text, website enquiries and the company's existing AI assistant.Other projects could include:Building voice agents for appointment confirmations and follow-up callsExpanding the company's customer-facing AI assistantUsing multimodal models to process service histories, photographs and documentsExtending an internal MCP server that connects AI tools with company systemsDeveloping internal applications and dashboardsContributing to applications used by employees across the company's storesThe approach is pragmatic. Sometimes the answer will be an AI integration. Sometimes it will be improving the workflow, using an existing product or building conventional software properly.How the team worksEngineers take ownership of particular business areas and work directly with the people using the software.The team works in short delivery cycles, releases regularly and uses agentic coding tools throughout development.AI may generate a significant proportion of the initial code, but engineers remain responsible for understanding, reviewing and safely releasing it.You will be supported by product colleagues, a Principal Engineer and an experienced wider team, with opportunities for pairing, technical guidance and code review.What you will needYou should have:A good grounding in software engineeringExperience developing with TypeScriptConfident use of an agentic coding tool such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or OpenAI CodexThe ability to understand, review and improve AI-generated codeThe confidence to speak with non-technical colleagues and ask useful questionsExperience taking a feature or personal project from an idea through to a working outcomeFamiliarity with Git and modern development practicesCommercial experience building AI-enabled products would be useful, but it is not essential. Relevant personal projects, experimentation and demonstrable use of agentic development tools will also be considered.Experience with any of the following would be helpful:Third-party API integrationsAWS Lambda or serverless developmentEvent-driven systemsOpenAI, Anthropic or other LLM APIsPrompt engineering, MCP or agent patternsReactPHP, Laravel, MySQL or DynamoDBSwift or SwiftUIYou are not expected to have worked with everything listed.What this role is notThis is not an ML engineering or data science role. You will be integrating existing AI services into business workflows rather than training models.It is also not a ticket-only development position. You will be expected to help understand the problem, shape the solution and take responsibility for what reaches production.The level is flexible.
