We are seeking an experienced Data Protection Officer to join a growing multi-site organisation and act as the subject matter expert for data protection and privacy.
This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive data protection professional who can provide practical advice, strengthen compliance frameworks and work collaboratively with stakeholders across a complex organisation.
The Role
Reporting to a senior Quality/Compliance leader, you will play a key role in ensuring the organisation meets its legal and regulatory obligations relating to the holding, processing and management of data.
You will lead the review, development and continuous improvement of data protection policies, procedures and processes, ensuring they remain aligned with relevant legislation, operational requirements and organisational values.
A key part of the role will involve building effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, identifying potential data and privacy risks, and ensuring appropriate actions are implemented to mitigate those risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the organisation's data protection and privacy framework.
- Review and enhance policies, procedures and processes relating to data protection.
- Monitor changes in legislation and regulatory requirements and make recommendations accordingly.
- Identify, assess and manage data protection and privacy risks.
- Undertake and oversee Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).
- Manage Subject Access Requests (SARs) and data breaches.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to colleagues and stakeholders.
- Promote data protection best practice throughout the organisation.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to support effective data management and compliance.
About You
You are likely to have:
- A strong understanding of UK data protection law and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Previous experience working as a Data Protection Officer, or within a larger Data Protection/Privacy team.
- Experience assessing new legislation and regulatory changes and translating these into practical recommendations.
- Experience conducting DPIAs, handling SARs and managing data breaches.
- Experience working with sensitive data; experience within education or a similarly regulated environment would be advantageous.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- A proactive, pragmatic approach to identifying and managing risk.
- The ability to travel regularly to sites across the organisation, some of which may be most easily accessed by car and may occasionally require overnight stays.
