Applied Scientist - Machine Learning

Applied Machine Learning Scientist

London (Hybrid - 2 days per week)

£80,000 - £110,000 + Benefits

An innovative technology company is building next-generation AI solutions that optimise complex physical systems. Backed by significant recent investment, they're growing their research team to develop machine learning models that solve real-world engineering challenges at scale.

This is an opportunity for an Applied Machine Learning Scientist to work on cutting-edge research where deep learning meets real-world infrastructure. You'll develop advanced machine learning models using large-scale sensor data, combining AI with physical modelling to improve the performance and efficiency of complex industrial systems.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving difficult research problems whilst seeing their work deployed into production.

The Role

Working as part of a multidisciplinary research team, you'll be responsible for designing, developing and validating machine learning models for complex physical environments. You'll work across the full life cycle, from problem formulation and experimentation through to model deployment alongside software engineering teams.

You'll combine machine learning techniques with domain knowledge to build models capable of understanding and predicting the behaviour of large-scale engineered systems.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design and develop advanced machine learning models for real-world optimisation problems.
  • Build, train and evaluate deep learning models using large-scale time-series datasets.
  • Develop predictive models for forecasting and system behaviour.
  • Work with digital twins, simulation environments and physics-informed modelling techniques.
  • Translate noisy operational data into robust machine learning solutions.
  • Validate model outputs against real-world system behaviour.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to deploy models into production.
  • Contribute to technical research, experimentation and continuous improvement of modelling approaches.

About You

You'll likely have a background in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Mathematics or Engineering, alongside strong commercial or research experience developing machine learning models.

You'll have experience with:

  • Deep Learning
  • Python
  • PyTorch or TensorFlow
  • Time Series Modelling
  • Forecasting
  • Machine Learning Research
  • Model Development and Evaluation
  • Large-scale Sensor or Operational Data

Any of the following would be advantageous

  • Reinforcement Learning
  • Digital Twins
  • Physics-informed Machine Learning
  • Simulation Modelling
  • Control Systems
  • Optimisation
  • Graph Neural Networks
  • Distributed or Federated Machine Learning
  • MLOps or Production ML
  • MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline

Why Apply?

  • Work on genuinely novel AI research with real-world impact.
  • Join a well-funded technology business entering an exciting growth phase.
  • Work alongside experienced AI researchers and engineers.
  • Opportunity to see cutting-edge research deployed into production.
  • Hybrid working (2 days per week in London).
