Senior HPC Engineer
Senior HPC Engineer
Microsoft HPC | Windows Server | Compute Clusters | Infrastructure Automation
London | Hybrid | Up to £120,000 + Bonus + Benefits
We're partnering with a highly successful London-based specialty insurance business that has built a sophisticated in-house analytics platform at the heart of its underwriting operation.
This is not a typical DevOps or cloud engineering position.
We're looking for an experienced infrastructure professional who has designed, built and supported high-performance computing environments, with particular interest in individuals who have worked extensively with Microsoft HPC, Windows Server and large-scale distributed compute platforms.
You'll join a highly capable analytics engineering team responsible for a mission-critical platform that processes complex actuarial and analytical workloads across a large-scale on-premise compute environment.
This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of a genuine HPC platform where performance, scalability and reliability directly impact business outcomes.
The Role
As a Senior HPC Platform Engineer, you'll be responsible for the design, operation and continuous improvement of a distributed Microsoft HPC environment supporting demanding analytical workloads.
Working closely with software engineers, quantitative specialists, product owners and infrastructure teams, you'll ensure the platform remains secure, performant and highly available while helping shape its future evolution.
You'll play a key role in:
- Managing and optimising Microsoft HPC environments and distributed compute clusters
- Supporting large-scale Windows Server infrastructure
- Operating and enhancing workload scheduling and compute orchestration capabilities
- Managing storage, backup, recovery and disaster recovery solutions
- Monitoring platform performance, throughput and resource utilisation
- Implementing infrastructure automation and configuration management
- Building and improving observability through logging, monitoring and alerting
- Supporting SQL Server environments underpinning critical analytics workloads
- Collaborating with engineering teams to improve platform reliability, scalability and operational maturity
- Defining best practices, documentation and operational runbooks
What We're Looking For
We're particularly interested in candidates who have experience supporting high-performance or distributed computing environments rather than purely cloud-native platforms.
Key experience includes:
- Strong experience administering Microsoft HPC environments
- Deep knowledge of Windows Server infrastructure
- Experience supporting distributed compute clusters and workload scheduling platforms
- Strong understanding of enterprise networking, storage and infrastructure architecture
- Experience with Active Directory/Microsoft Entra
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server installation, administration and optimisation
- Experience managing backup, resilience and disaster recovery solutions
- Exposure to infrastructure automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet or similar
- Experience implementing monitoring, logging and observability solutions
- Strong troubleshooting skills across infrastructure, networking and application layers
Desirable experience:
- HPE infrastructure and management tooling
- Terraform, Bicep or other Infrastructure as Code tooling
- Docker and Kubernetes
- Azure DevOps or CI/CD pipeline tooling
- Hybrid infrastructure environments incorporating both physical and virtualised platforms
Why Apply?
- Work on a genuine high-performance computing platform rather than a traditional IT environment
- Own critical infrastructure that directly powers advanced analytics and decision-making
- Join a highly technical and collaborative engineering culture
- Significant influence over platform strategy and future architecture
- Exposure to large-scale distributed computing challenges
- Excellent salary, bonus and benefits package
If you're an infrastructure engineer with strong Microsoft HPC expertise and are looking for a role where distributed computing is central to the business, we'd love to hear from you.
