Development Apprentice
Role
Working within the Digital Solutions Team and reporting to the Digital Solutions Manager, the role of the Development Apprentice will be to perform the following:
- Actively, engage in the apprenticeship training program tutorials, and self-study to build a strong foundation in programming languages, tools, and software development methodologies, whilst staying updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies relevant to software development.
- Assist in writing, testing, and debugging code as part of larger development projects, ensuring adherence to coding standards and guidelines, implementing small features or components under the supervision of senior developers, contributing to the overall project.
- Participate in code reviews to learn from feedback and improve coding skills, while also helping to identify potential issues in the team’s code, collaborating with team members on project tasks, learning how to work effectively within a development team.
- Support the testing process by writing unit tests, performing manual tests, and helping to identify and fix bugs, ensuring that the code developed meets the quality and functionality requirements before it is applied to live systems.
- Maintain accurate documentation of code, including comments, technical documentation, and user manuals as required, reporting on progress, challenges, and learning outcomes to mentors or managers, providing updates on assigned tasks.
- Assist in maintaining and updating existing software by identifying and fixing bugs, and implementing small enhancements, providing support for ongoing projects, including participating in stand-ups, sprint planning, and other Agile practices as part of the development lifecycle.
Training
Apprentices will undertake the level 6 digital and technology solutions professional degree apprenticeship studied at University of Staffordshire. Apprentices will complete launch weeks at our Stoke-on-Trent campus for 1 week per semester. On completion of the programme, apprentices will achieve a BSc (Hons) Digital & Technology Solutions.
This role offers long term opportunities to progress to a permanent position upon completion of the apprenticeship.
On completion of the apprenticeship, you will have the qualifications and practical experience required to apply for roles in the field of Software Development.
