Development Manager

I'm partnering with a growing UK technology business that is strengthening its engineering function and modernising its platforms. They're now looking for a Development Manager to guide a small cross-functional team through their next phase of growth.

This role combines leadership, delivery oversight, and light technical direction. You'll support developers day-to-day, improve engineering processes, and help shape the long-term roadmap - while still staying close enough to the tech to guide decisions around architecture, quality and best practice.

Expect a culture that values ownership, curiosity and continuous improvement.

The Tech Environment (Broadly Speaking)

  • .NET / C# backend engineering

  • Modern JavaScript front end (React, Next.js or similar)

  • Cloud-based services (AWS/Azure)

  • Modern tooling, automation and clean engineering practices

(This isn't a hands-on coding role - just enough technical familiarity to mentor, guide and influence good decisions.)

The Role

  • Lead, mentor and develop a small engineering team

  • Support planning, delivery and engineering best practice

  • Influence architectural decisions and technical direction

  • Improve workflows, processes and team performance

  • Work closely with product and senior stakeholders

  • Drive a culture of quality, ownership and continuous improvement

What You'll Bring

  • Experience managing or leading software development teams

  • Strong understanding of modern engineering practices

  • Familiarity with .NET / C# environments and modern JS front ends

  • Ability to guide technical decisions without being hands-on

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management

  • A collaborative, supportive, people-first leadership style

Why It's Worth a Conversation

  • £85,000 salary

  • Hybrid working: 2 days a week in Reading

  • Strong benefits (health, pension, holiday, discounts etc.)

  • High visibility and influence over engineering culture

  • Opportunity to shape modernisation and drive best practice

  • Clear progression opportunities as the business scales
