Lead Scala Developer - Contract - Outside IR35

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Lead Scala Developer to join a high-performing engineering team delivering scalable, cloud-native applications and APIs. This is an exciting opportunity for a hands-on technical leader who enjoys solving complex problems, mentoring developers, and driving best practices across software delivery.
You will play a key role in leading the design and development of mission-critical Back End services, working closely with architects, product owners, and delivery teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development and delivery of scalable Back End applications using Scala
- Architect and develop RESTful services and microservices using the Play Framework
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to development teams
- Drive engineering best practices, code quality, and CI/CD adoption
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define technical solutions and delivery roadmaps
- Participate in architectural decisions and technology strategy
- Perform code reviews and ensure adherence to development standards
- Support agile delivery practices and continuous improvement initiatives
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial experience developing applications with Scala
- Proven experience building APIs using the Play Framework
- Demonstrable experience in a Lead Developer, Technical Lead, or similar leadership role
- Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices
- Strong knowledge of software architecture and design patterns
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices
- Ability to mentor developers and lead technical discussions
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
Desirable Skills
- Experience with Akka/Pekko ecosystems
- Cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Docker and Kubernetes experience
- Experience working within highly regulated or enterprise environments
- Knowledge of event-driven architecture and messaging technologies
