Scala Developer - Contract

Contract: 6 months
Location: Fully Remote (UK-based)
Rate: Competitive Daily Rate (Outside IR35)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Scala Developer to join a high-performing engineering team delivering scalable, cloud-native solutions within a modern Agile environment. This is an exciting opportunity for a developer with strong functional programming expertise and experience building distributed systems, microservices, and data-driven applications.

Working closely with architects, engineers, DevOps specialists, and product teams, you will play a key role in designing and developing robust, high-performance applications that support critical business services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain applications using Scala.
  • Build scalable microservices and distributed systems.
  • Develop clean, reusable, and well-tested code following engineering best practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
  • Participate in architecture discussions and technical design workshops.
  • Write and maintain automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
  • Optimise application performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
  • Contribute to code reviews and foster engineering excellence across the team.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong commercial experience developing applications in Scala.
  • Experience with functional programming principles and practices.
  • Proven experience building RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Knowledge of Akka, Pekko, Cats, ZIO, or similar Scala frameworks.
  • Experience working with distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design and software engineering principles.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Familiarity with Git and modern version control practices.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Knowledge of Kafka or other messaging/event-streaming technologies.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Exposure to DevOps tooling and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience working on large-scale enterprise or public sector programmes.
  • Knowledge of data processing frameworks such as Spark.
