Scala Developer - Contract

Role: Scala Developer
Contract: 6-12 Months
Location: Remote (occasional UK travel)
Clearance: SC Eligible

Overview

We're looking for an experienced Scala Developer to join a government digital programme, building secure, scalable, and user-focused services within an Agile delivery team.

Essential Skills

• Strong commercial Scala development experience
• Experience with Akka/Pekko, Play Framework, and Microservices
• REST API development
• AWS, Azure, or GCP
• Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform
• CI/CD and DevOps practices
• Agile delivery experience

Government Experience

Candidates must have previous experience delivering digital solutions within UK Government or the wider public sector, ideally on GDS-aligned programmes.

Desirable

• Active SC Clearance
• Kafka or event-driven architecture experience
• Experience with HMRC, DWP, Home Office, DVLA, MoJ, DEFRA, or similar departments

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Scala-based applications and APIs
• Build scalable microservices in cloud environments
• Collaborate with cross-functional Agile teams
• Contribute to code reviews, testing, and CI/CD pipelines
• Deliver secure, high-quality solutions to government standards
