Overview

We are currently seeking 2 experienced Senior/Lead Java Developers to join a major public sector digital transformation programme. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the modernisation of critical citizen-facing services, helping to replace Legacy systems with scalable, cloud-native solutions that improve user experience and operational efficiency.

Working within a multi-disciplinary agile environment, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and delivering high-quality software solutions while providing technical leadership across engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and deployment of secure, scalable software solutions using Java.
• Provide technical leadership and mentor junior and mid-level developers.
• Drive engineering best practices including CI/CD, automated testing, peer reviews, and DevOps principles.
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Delivery Managers, Architects, Designers, and other stakeholders to deliver user-centred digital services.
• Design and implement cloud-native applications and microservices architectures.
• Contribute to technical strategy, architecture decisions, and engineering standards.
• Ensure systems are resilient, secure, accessible, and maintainable.
• Translate complex business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Identify and resolve performance issues, architectural challenges, and technical debt.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives across development teams.
• Champion modern software engineering practices and coding standards.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong commercial experience as a Senior or Lead Java Developer.
• Expertise in Java development within large-scale enterprise environments.
• Proven experience leading development teams and providing technical mentorship.
• Strong knowledge of microservices, REST APIs, and event-driven architectures.
• Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
• Cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Containerisation experience using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices.
• Experience designing secure, highly available, and scalable systems.
• Knowledge of software architecture principles and modern design patterns.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
