SC Cleared DNS Architect

We are currently working with a leading global consultancy and supporting the delivery of a major enterprise networking and infrastructure programme. Due to increased demand, we are seeking an experienced DNS Architect to join the team on a contract basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled DNS specialist to take ownership of designing and implementing secure, scalable and high-performance DNS solutions across enterprise, hybrid and cloud environments.

Please note: Due to the nature of the project, the successful candidate will have a valid and active SC Clearance before a start.

The Role

As the DNS Architect, you will be responsible for the architecture, design, implementation and ongoing optimisation of enterprise DNS services. You will act as the technical authority for DNS across on-premises and cloud environments, ensuring services are secure, resilient and aligned to business and security requirements.

You will work closely with infrastructure, cloud, networking and security teams, providing expert guidance on DNS strategy, governance and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Design

  • Design and develop robust DNS architectures across enterprise, hybrid and cloud environments.
  • Define DNS strategies covering scalability, resilience, high availability and performance.
  • Develop DNS standards, governance frameworks and best practices.
  • Support DNS transformation, migration and modernisation initiatives.

Implementation & Management

  • Deploy, configure and manage DNS platforms, including:
    • BIND
    • Microsoft DNS
    • Infoblox
    • AWS Route 53
    • Azure DNS
  • Manage DNS zones, records, delegations and name resolution services.
  • Lead DNS upgrades, migrations and service improvements.

Security & Compliance

  • Implement DNS security controls including DNSSEC, DDoS mitigation and threat protection.
  • Work closely with cyber security teams to detect and mitigate DNS-based threats such as spoofing and tunnelling.
  • Ensure DNS services comply with organisational security standards and regulatory requirements.

Performance & Monitoring

  • Monitor DNS service health, performance and availability.
  • Optimise query resolution performance and reduce latency.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting and incident response processes.

Troubleshooting & Support

  • Act as the escalation point for complex DNS and networking issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement preventative measures.
  • Provide expert technical support and guidance across cross-functional teams.

Automation & Innovation

  • Develop automation solutions using Python, PowerShell or Bash.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code approaches using technologies such as Terraform, ARM or CloudFormation.
  • Drive continuous improvement through automation and modern engineering practices.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Expert knowledge of DNS protocols and technologies, including:
    • UDP/TCP
    • Recursive and authoritative DNS
    • Caching
    • Zone transfers
  • Extensive hands-on experience with:
    • BIND
    • Windows DNS
    • Infoblox
    • AWS Route 53
    • Azure DNS
    • Google Cloud DNS
  • Strong understanding of:
    • DNSSEC
    • DHCP
    • IP Address Management (IPAM)
    • TCP/IP Networking
    • Routing, Firewalls and load balancing
  • Experience with Scripting and automation using Python, PowerShell or Bash.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools including Terraform, ARM or CloudFormation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills within complex enterprise environments.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
