SC Cleared Technical Author - Outside IR35
We are seeking an experienced Technical Author to support a nationally critical Home Office programme operating within secure environments.
This role will be responsible for producing, maintaining, and managing high-quality technical and operational documentation to support infrastructure deployments, system upgrades, and ongoing service delivery. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, security, and programme teams to ensure documentation is clear, accurate, and compliant with governance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce and maintain technical documentation including installation guides, configuration documents, build documents, and support procedures
- Develop and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions
- Translate complex technical information into clear, structured documentation for operational and technical audiences
- Ensure documentation aligns with security policies, compliance standards, and programme governance requirements
- Support change management processes by maintaining accurate document version control
- Work closely with Delivery Engineers, Network Engineers, and programme leads to capture technical detail
- Review and improve existing documentation for clarity, accuracy, and consistency
- Support audit and assurance activities by ensuring documentation is complete and compliant
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience as a Technical Author within IT, infrastructure, or secure environments
- Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, networking, and system deployment concepts
- Experience producing build guides, configuration documentation, and operational manuals
- Excellent written communication skills with strong attention to detail
- Experience working within structured governance or change-controlled environments
- Ability to engage with technical stakeholders and extract accurate information
- Strong document management and version control experience
Desirable
- Experience within Government, Home Office, Defence, or regulated environments
- Familiarity with ISO standards, ITIL processes, or secure system accreditation requirements
- Experience using documentation tools such as Confluence, SharePoint, or structured document management systems
