Data Centre Engineer

An opportunity has arisen for a multi-skilled Data Centre Engineer to join a highly regarded organisation in Hertfordshire. You will be part of a small, dedicated team delivering Data Centre services for a prestigious international financial client.
This role operates on a rotating shift pattern:
4 days on → 4 days off → 4 nights on → 4 nights off (24/7 coverage).
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute and adhere to change control processes
- Manage and resolve incidents promptly and effectively
- Track and manage Data Centre assets
- Supervise and escort third-party vendors on-site
- Plan, install, and decommission IT hardware in accordance with strict Data Centre standards
- Install and remove structured cabling and networking equipment
- Maintain and update all relevant documentation and asset inventories
- Fulfil service requests within agreed service level agreements (SLAs)
- Adhere to internal and client Health & Safety policies and procedures
- Comply with all quality standards required by internal stakeholders and the client
- Follow all approved operational processes and security protocols related to Data Centre access and control
Technical Tasks Include:
- Maintenance and use of Data Centre management toolsets
- Governance of Data Centre operations and environment
- Collaborate with facilities teams to optimise energy efficiency
- Oversee daily operations including installations, changes, decommissions, and routine maintenance
- Contribute to service improvement initiatives
- Perform basic server configuration (e.g., iDRAC, ILO)
- Fault diagnosis, troubleshooting, and escalation
- Racking, stacking, patching, and hardware moves or changes
- Participate in major infrastructure activities such as power upgrades or replacements
- Manage complex cabling layouts across racks and rooms to maintain a stable IT environment
What We're Looking For:
Essential:
- Experience working in high-availability or high-risk environments, ideally in Data Centres
- Strong understanding of infrastructure technologies and networking fundamentals
- High attention to detail with a proactive attitude
- Competency in Microsoft Office applications and IT service tools
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Capable of handling pressure and meeting deadlines
- Flexible and willing to adapt to shift work
- Clear verbal and written communication skills at all levels
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
Desirable:
- Familiarity with DCIM (Data Centre Infrastructure Management) tools and best practices
- Experience using service desk platforms such as ServiceNow or Remedy
