Role Overview
A growing organisation is seeking a senior Commercial / Quantity Surveying Leader to provide commercial oversight, governance, and strategic support across multiple projects. The role involves leading commercial performance, managing risk, and developing a high-performing commercial team while working closely with project and operational stakeholders.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide commercial leadership and governance across all projects, ensuring effective cost control and financial management
- Deliver regular commercial updates and financial reports to senior leadership
- Prepare accurate monthly and ad-hoc financial reports, tracking revenue, costs, risks, and opportunities
- Identify, evaluate, negotiate, and mitigate commercial and contractual risks
- Ensure timely and accurate forecasting, budget control, and reporting of key commercial performance indicators
- Escalate significant commercial risks and issues to senior leadership with clear recommendations
- Support internal and external audits through the provision of accurate documentation and commercial insight
- Lead, manage, and develop a team of commercial or quantity surveying professionals
- Set objectives, conduct one-to-one meetings, performance reviews, and appraisals
- Identify training needs and support ongoing professional development and career progression
- Allocate resources effectively across projects to balance workloads and priorities
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance team culture aligned with organisational values
- Oversee commercial input into bids and tenders, ensuring financial viability and appropriate risk management
- Manage the commercial performance of multiple concurrent projects
- Lead the preparation and control of project budgets, forecasts, and cost plans
- Carry out full contract administration duties, including variations, final accounts, and dispute resolution
- Develop procurement strategies and manage subcontractor agreements
- Oversee procurement activities, including approval of subcontract and material orders, ensuring contractual compliance
- Ensure adherence to contract terms and the timely issue of contractual notices
- Attend client and stakeholder meetings, representing the organisation professionally
- Review valuations and prepare cost reconciliation and profit reporting
- Collaborate closely with project, commercial, and operational teams to support project delivery
- Ensure commercial input aligns with project health and safety requirements
- Conduct project and post-project reviews, driving continuous improvement through lessons learned
- Maintain compliance with internal processes, systems, and data accuracy requirements
- Promote and uphold health and safety standards for employees and third parties
- Act as a professional representative of the business, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with data protection and information security standards
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in a senior commercial or quantity surveying role
- Strong leadership capability with a track record of developing and managing teams
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience in quantity surveying, construction management, or a related discipline
- Strong commercial awareness and financial management expertise
- Demonstrated experience managing commercial and contractual risk
- Ability to influence, negotiate, and manage stakeholders effectively
- Experience working under pressure and meeting demanding deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High level of numeracy, analytical ability, and attention to detail
- Proficiency in enterprise project or commercial management systems and standard office software
- Relevant professional accreditations aligned with the seniority of the role
- Willingness to travel as required
