UNIX Engineer - SC Cleared (Central Government)
Location: Barrow-in-Furness (Hybrid working - approximately 50% onsite) Rate: £575 per day (Inside IR35) Contract Length: Initial 3 months (with potential extension)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced UNIX Engineer with active SC clearance to support a Central Government programme operating within a highly secure and regulated environment.
The successful candidate will support and enhance enterprise level UNIX infrastructure, with a strong focus on Oracle Solaris platforms, LDOM virtualisation, and the delivery of resilient, high availability systems. The role will involve system administration, platform optimisation, and migration activities, working closely with infrastructure and application teams to maintain performance, stability, and compliance with government security standards.
Please note: Active SC clearance is essential for this role. Applications without current SC clearance cannot be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer, support, and maintain Oracle Solaris environments across T-series hardware (T5, T7, T8)
- Configure, manage, and support LDOMs (Logical Domains) within a virtualised infrastructure
- Deliver UNIX system migrations and upgrades, ensuring minimal disruption and risk
- Design and implement high-availability and resilience solutions, including clustering and failover
- Monitor system performance, identify issues, and carry out advanced troubleshooting
- Collaborate with infrastructure, network, and application teams to ensure seamless integration
- Ensure systems remain compliant with Central Government security policies and operational standards
- Produce and maintain technical documentation and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Required Skills and Experience
- Active SC clearance (mandatory)
- Strong hands-on experience administering Oracle Solaris
- Proven experience configuring and managing LDOMs
- Experience working with Oracle T-series hardware (T5, T7, T8)
- Demonstrable experience delivering UNIX migrations and platform upgrades
- Knowledge of clustering technologies for high availability and disaster recovery
- Solid understanding of UNIX networking, storage, and security principles
- Ability to troubleshoot complex issues in secure, enterprise environments
