Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Java Developer to join a major Government programme delivering secure, cloud-native digital services. The successful candidate will have extensive experience building scalable Java applications within AWS environments and will play a key role in designing, developing, and enhancing microservices-based solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade Java applications.
• Build and enhance cloud-native services hosted within AWS environments.
• Develop scalable and secure microservices architectures.
• Collaborate with architects, DevOps engineers, business analysts, and QA teams to deliver high-quality digital services.
• Contribute to technical design discussions and architectural decisions.
• Develop and consume RESTful APIs and integrate with internal and external systems.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives across development practices and platform capabilities.
• Perform code reviews and promote engineering best practices.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across distributed systems.
• Mentor junior developers and contribute to the wider engineering community.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong commercial Java development experience.
• Experience delivering solutions within AWS cloud environments.
• Proven experience building and supporting microservices architectures.
• Strong understanding of secure software development practices.
• Experience developing RESTful APIs and integration services.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Experience working within Agile delivery teams.
• Strong stakeholder communication and collaboration skills.
• Previous experience delivering projects within Government or Public Sector organisations.

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge of AWS services such as:
• ECS/EKS
• Lambda
• API Gateway
• S3
• RDS
• CloudWatch
• IAM
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Exposure to automated testing frameworks such as Selenium or Cucumber, working alongside QA teams.
• Experience of GDS-aligned delivery programmes.
• AWS certifications.
