Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Java Developer to join a major Government programme delivering secure, cloud-native digital services. The successful candidate will have extensive experience building scalable Java applications within AWS environments and will play a key role in designing, developing, and enhancing microservices-based solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade Java applications.
- Build and enhance cloud-native services hosted within AWS environments.
- Develop scalable and secure microservices architectures.
- Collaborate with architects, DevOps engineers, business analysts, and QA teams to deliver high-quality digital services.
- Contribute to technical design discussions and architectural decisions.
- Develop and consume RESTful APIs and integrate with internal and external systems.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across development practices and platform capabilities.
- Perform code reviews and promote engineering best practices.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across distributed systems.
- Mentor junior developers and contribute to the wider engineering community.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial Java development experience.
- Experience delivering solutions within AWS cloud environments.
- Proven experience building and supporting microservices architectures.
- Strong understanding of secure software development practices.
- Experience developing RESTful APIs and integration services.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Experience working within Agile delivery teams.
- Strong stakeholder communication and collaboration skills.
- Previous experience delivering projects within Government or Public Sector organisations.
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of AWS services such as:
- ECS/EKS
- Lambda
- API Gateway
- S3
- RDS
- CloudWatch
- IAM
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Exposure to automated testing frameworks such as Selenium or Cucumber, working alongside QA teams.
- Experience of GDS-aligned delivery programmes.
- AWS certifications.
