The Role

A Supplier Development Engineer is responsible for assessing and developing supplier capability, improving manufacturing processes and performance and ensuring suppliers consistently meet quality, cost, delivery, regulatory and customer requirements.

Your responsibilities:

  • Assess supplier capability and capacity, identify performance gaps and agree structured development plans with suppliers.
  • Conduct supplier assessments and audits to evaluate manufacturing capability, process maturity, and compliance with quality, regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Lead structured problem-solving with suppliers to contain issues, determine root causes, implement corrective actions and prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor supplier performance across quality, cost, delivery, capacity, and risk indicators and drive recovery actions where targets are not achieved.
  • Develop and implement improvement plans that increase supplier process capability, reduce defects and lead time and improve production stability.
  • Work with engineering, manufacturing, procurement, quality, and programme teams to deliver supplier development, industrialisation and production-readiness activities.
  • Support APQP, PPAP, process validation and production-readiness reviews to ensure suppliers can meet programme and serial-production requirements.
  • Build effective supplier relationships, escalate risks when required and promote sustainable operational excellence across the supply chain.

Your Profile

Essential skills/knowledge/experience:

Manufacturing process - Machining, Casting, forging

  • Knowledge of special manufacturing processes, including:
  • Heat treatment processes such as solution heat treatment, ageing and case hardening
  • Surface treatment and finishing processes such as anodising, plating and painting
  • Joining and consolidation processes such as welding, brazing and sintering
  • Fluorescent penetrant inspection
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing quality, inspection methods and supplier process controls
  • Working knowledge of aerospace quality standards, including AS9100 and AS13100
  • Practical knowledge of quality and supplier development tools, including APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, SPC, 8D and root-cause analysis
  • Good knowledge of engineering drawings and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)

Desirable skills/knowledge/experience:

  • Experience in project management, supplier development planning and operational risk management
  • Effective communication, reporting and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly
  • Strong supplier negotiation, relationship management and cross-functional stakeholder management skills
