Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Business Analyst to join a large-scale R&D data engagement with a leading global pharmaceutical company, focused on the analysis, mapping, and business interpretation of raw scientific instrument and equipment data. The role sits at the intersection of laboratory science and business/data analysis — translating raw outputs from instruments such as plate readers, Raman spectrometers, and cell counters into structured, business-relevant insights, mappings, and documentation that support downstream data and analytics initiatives across the R&D function.
This is a domain-rich role suited to a senior Business Analyst who understands laboratory/instrument data generation processes and can bridge the gap between scientific/technical data producers and business/data teams consuming that data.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse raw instrument and equipment data (e.g., plate readers, Raman instruments, cell counters, and similar lab equipment) to understand data structure, format, and business meaning.
- Perform business analysis and requirements gathering with scientists, lab operations teams, and data engineering/architecture teams to define how instrument data should be interpreted, structured, and used.
- Create and maintain data mapping documentation — mapping raw instrument outputs to standardised business/data models, taxonomies, or ontologies used across R&D.
- Document business rules, transformation logic, and data lineage from instrument source to downstream systems (e.g., data lakes, analytics platforms).
- Collaborate with data architects, data engineers, and scientists to ensure business context is accurately reflected in technical data models.
- Identify data quality issues, gaps, or inconsistencies in instrument data and work with stakeholders to define resolution approaches.
- Support the creation of process flows, data dictionaries, and business glossaries specific to instrument/equipment data domains.
- Translate complex scientific/instrument outputs into clear business requirements and user stories for technical delivery teams, managed and tracked via Azure DevOps (ADO).
- Engage with cross-functional stakeholders (lab scientists, informatics teams, data governance, IT) to ensure alignment between scientific intent and data/business outcomes.
- Support UAT (User Acceptance Testing) and validation of data mappings and business rules against real instrument data.
Required Skills & Experience
- 8+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, ideally within a life sciences, pharmaceutical, or scientific R&D environment.
- Familiarity with laboratory instruments and equipment data — exposure to plate readers, Raman spectroscopy, cell counters, or similar analytical instruments is highly desirable.
- Strong track record in data mapping, business analysis, and requirements documentation practices.
- Ability to interpret raw scientific/instrument data outputs and translate them into structured business logic.
- Experience working with data governance, data quality, or data architecture teams in a large enterprise setting.
- Strong stakeholder management skills — comfortable engaging both scientific/technical SMEs and senior business/data stakeholders.
- Excellent documentation skills — data dictionaries, business glossaries, process/data flow diagrams, mapping specifications.
- Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) for Agile delivery — backlog, user stories, sprint tracking.
- Understanding of pharma R&D processes (e.g., experimental workflows, lab data lifecycle) is a strong advantage.
