Back End Developer

Senior Backend Engineer | Kotlin / Golang/ GCP

6-month contract | Outside IR35

Remote First – Occasional London based office visits

Up to £500 per day

An established consumer-facing technology business is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to support the continued evolution of high-scale backend services used by a large international user base.

This role would suit an experienced contractor who is comfortable working in Kotlin-heavy backend environments, can operate with autonomy, and is confident helping teams move from legacy systems toward more modern, cloud-native services.

The role

You will be involved in designing, building, and improving reliable backend services, working closely with product, mobile, platform, and engineering teams. The environment is fast-moving, product-focused, and requires someone who can turn ambiguous requirements into clear technical direction.

Key experience

• Strong backend engineering experience with Kotlin
• Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform
• Background in scalable, production-grade systems
• Experience in consumer-facing, mobile-first, or high-traffic product environments
• Ability to lead technical work from discovery through delivery
• Strong communication and ownership mindset

Useful additional experience

• PHP exposure, especially within legacy or hybrid environments
• Golang exposure
• Experience supporting legacy-to-modern platform transitions
• Cloud architecture, observability, reliability, and cost optimisation
• Mentoring or helping teams adopt modern backend practices
