Senior Software Engineer
Senior Full Stack Engineer · PE-backed AI startup · 4 days in Central London · £115,000
A general manager opens a coffee shop at 6am. The supplier hasn't delivered. Three of the morning rota have called in sick. The stock count from last night doesn't add up. Nobody has built software for this person.
The company is building it. At Pret A Manger alone, the platform is on track to save each general manager two hours every day, equivalent to $4m in annual savings.
The company
PE-backed AI startup rebuilding back-of-house operations for hospitality. Founded by an operator who scaled and sold a coffee chain to Blank Street in 2022. Fresh £3m round closed this week led by Calculus Capital, giving the team 4 years of runway on top of existing revenue.
Pret A Manger, Dunkin' Donuts, WatchHouse and Yolk Brands run their back of house on this platform across 6 countries. The agent layer being built isn't a feature, it's the new architecture for how hospitality operates.
Who you'd be working with
- A founder who built and exited a real hospitality business before this one
- A Principal Engineer, Imperial-trained, 20+ years across startups and scale-ups
- A Tech Lead with a startup-to-acquisition track record
- A Senior AI Engineer with Ex-Amazon AGI Applied Scientist credentials, NeurIPS first author, US patent pending
- A Senior Data Engineer with 6+ years building production pipelines for 1000+ retail outlets
- A Head of Product with 12 years across banking, healthcare and AI-powered product
Plus a small group of talented juniors shipping every week.
What you'd actually do
Ship product end-to-end using their stack (Node/NestJS, TypeScript, AWS, React), working with the Founder and Head of Product to decide what to build, not just how to build it.
Partner closely with the Senior AI Engineer on getting agentic workflows into production. Help the Tech Lead mentor the juniors. Take a lead on how the team adopts AI in the way it builds, every day.
You'll likely:
- Come from a maths, physics, computer science or engineering background. Not a hard requirement, but the team naturally leans this way.
- Have 5-10 years building production software used by enterprise level companies
- Ask why before how. Push back on specs that don't make sense for the customer.
- Be genuinely with modern AI tooling. Claude Code, Cursor, agents, evals.
- Be comfortable in ambiguity. Take a customer problem and drive to a solution without waiting for a spec.
Above all, you think about the GM running the coffee shop at 6am as a real person, not a persona.
