What You'll Do
As Senior DBA, you'll play a key part in the evolution of the organisation's enterprise database estate, ensuring performance, resilience and scalability. Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing, monitoring and optimising Postgres and SQL Server environments
- Supporting a strategic migration from on-premises databases into cloud-hosted services (AWS RDS)
- Designing and implementing database architecture, backup strategies and security standards
- Troubleshooting performance issues and supporting production systems
- Delivering upgrades, migrations and new installations across environments
- Partnering with developers on database design and SQL optimisation
- Driving automation and contributing to the organisation's DevOps direction
- Working closely with infrastructure and application teams to enhance reliability and service quality
- Participating in an on-call rota and occasional weekend work when required
What You'll Need
Essential:
- Expert knowledge of Postgres, including experience with large, distributed estates
- Strong SQL skills and the ability to diagnose and optimise performance bottlenecks
- Competence with automation tools (PowerShell, Python or similar)
- Hands-on experience supporting production environments and mission-critical systems
- Strong understanding of High Availability and Disaster Recovery technologies and database security
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively across teams
- A proactive mindset and enthusiasm for learning emerging tools and technologies
Desirable
- Exposure to AWS (or other cloud platforms) for database hosting
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code, virtualisation, or containerisation
- Experience using Git and CI/CD tooling
- Background in financial services or other highly regulated environments
