Principal/Staff/Senior Data Engineer ⚙️

Location: London, 2 days hybrid

Type: 12-Month Contract (Inside IR35) with Possible Extensions

About the Role

Are you a visionary technologist who loves turning raw data into strategic advantage? As a Principal/Staff Data Engineer in this global client in the energy trading sector ⚡, you will architect end-to-end data platforms, champion observability and SRE best practices, and influence how our client's global business leverage data for faster, smarter decisions.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Hands-On Delivery: Architect, prototype, and deliver robust Python-based, containerized web services on Azure
  • Build CI/CD Excellence: Design and implement automated deployment pipelines to drive speed, reliability, and low-latency data aggregation
  • Drive Observability: Embed SRE observability frameworks (logging, metrics, tracing) into production environments
  • Shape Data Strategy: Partner with business leaders to conceptualize and deliver data foundations that unlock value across global operations
  • Community Leadership: Mentor and grow a vibrant community of data engineers through training, conference talks, and best-practice sharing
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Bridge People, Process, Data, and Technology to drive continuous improvement and a data-driven culture

Who You Are

  • 10–15 years of backend engineering experience in Python, with deep expertise in Azure and containerized microservices
  • Proven track record building low-latency data aggregation solutions and large-scale data platforms
  • Hands-on with SRE observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK) and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps)
  • Strong communicator—comfortable influencing both technical teams and senior stakeholders
  • Passionate about up-skilling and community leadership; you love teaching and presenting at meetups or conferences

Must-Have Qualifications

  • University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related IT discipline
  • 11+ years in IT, with 2+ major projects delivering production-scale data solutions
  • Expert in OLTP/OLAP database design, optimization, and complex query performance
  • Proven ability to design data governance, modeling, and quality initiatives

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience in energy trading or risk modeling
  • Exposure to SAP (BODS, SLT, HANA, BW) and analytics tools (SAC, WebI)
  • Leadership of small agile teams (Scrum/Kanban) and external partner ecosystems
