The Role
As a Data Engineer / Data Modeller, you'll play a key role in designing scalable data solutions across Azure, with a particular focus on Azure Cosmos DB and NoSQL data modelling. You'll design and optimise data models, schemas and data structures, while considering performance, scalability and cost.
You'll also support data migration and integration projects, working with technologies such as Azure Data Factory and SQL to build pipelines and ensure data is accurately validated and reconciled. You'll work closely with architects, analysts and stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust data models and well-structured solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and maintain scalable data models across SQL and NoSQL, with a strong focus on Azure Cosmos DB
- Design and optimise Cosmos DB models, including partitioning, indexing, performance, scalability, and cost.
- Define and implement data contracts, including schemas, versioning, and validation rules.
- Design and orchestrate ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Factory.
- Support data migrations, including mapping, validation, reconciliation, and data quality.
- Develop and optimise SQL queries, stored procedures, and views.
- Translate business and application requirements into scalable data models and schemas.
- Troubleshoot and optimise data pipelines, models, and queries for performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, analysts, and stakeholders to deliver data solutions.
- Maintain data dictionaries, ER diagrams, schemas, contracts, and migration documentation.
- Apply data modelling, NoSQL, and cloud engineering best practices across Azure.
About You
You will be a Data Engineer / Data Modeller with strong hands-on experience in Azure Cosmos DB, NoSQL data modelling, and data integration. You'll have a solid understanding of data modelling principles, including schema design, partitioning, indexing, and performance optimisation, alongside experience working with technologies such as Azure Data Factory and SQL.
You'll have practical experience supporting data migration projects and designing data contracts, with the ability to translate business and application requirements into scalable, well-structured data solutions. You'll enjoy solving complex data challenges, improving data quality and performance, and working closely with architects, engineers, analysts, and stakeholders across the business.
Key requirements:
- 6+ years' experience in Data Engineering, Data Modelling, or a similar data-focused role.
- Excellent hands-on experience with Azure Cosmos DB and strong NoSQL data modelling knowledge.
- Strong understanding of data modelling, including schema design, partitioning, indexing, and performance optimisation.
- Proven experience with Azure Data Factory for ETL/ELT pipeline design, orchestration, and monitoring.
- Strong SQL skills, including queries, stored procedures, views, and performance tuning.
- Practical experience supporting data migration projects, including validation and reconciliation.
- Experience designing data contracts, schemas, and validation rules is highly desirable.
- Experience with Azure services such as Databricks, Synapse, or Azure Storage would be advantageous.
