Data Warehouse Engineer (SC Enhanced)
Data Warehouse Engineer (Contract)
Public Sector Programme | 6 Months | SC Enhanced (Current Clearance Required)
OverviewA large-scale data warehouse programme has completed its discovery and requirements definition phase. This engagement will focus on end-to-end delivery, including building the data warehouse, developing integration pipelines, creating the semantic layer, and delivering Power BI reporting aligned to established architecture and design.
The source system is a mission-critical, always-on, globally connected Case Management System. The solution must support nightly data ingestion with zero disruption to system availability.
Key Responsibilities- Design and build a star schema data warehouse and associated data marts, including fact and dimension tables (e.g., Fact Cases, FactCaseEvents, Date, Case, Status, User, Organisation)
- Implement Slowly Changing Dimensions (SCD) where appropriate
- Develop and optimise Azure Data Factory (ADF) pipelines to ingest data from the core system, ensuring efficiency across global time zones and 24/7 operations
- Build Power BI tabular models and datasets to form the semantic layer, including robust row-level security (RLS)
- Deliver:
- Layer 1: Standard operational and management reporting
- Layer 2: OLAP-style analytical capabilities for deeper organisational insight
- Conduct performance optimisation and tuning across the solution
- Produce technical documentation to support operational handover
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure delivery aligns with discovery outputs and participate in programme governance
- Proven hands-on delivery using Microsoft Azure data technologies, including:
- Azure SQL / Synapse
- Azure Data Factory
- Power BI (datasets, tabular models, and reporting)
- Strong experience building data warehouse solutions, including:
- Star schema design
- Fact and dimension modelling
- SCD implementation
- T-SQL performance tuning
- Experience working within always-on or mission-critical environments with strict availability and refresh constraints
- Ability to deliver within an established programme, taking pre-defined architecture and designs through to production
- Experience within public sector or regulated environments is advantageous
- SC Enhanced (eSC) clearance must be current and active at the point of engagement (lapsed clearance cannot be considered)
- Candidates must be actively working with cloud-based Microsoft data platforms
- Experience limited to on-premise technologies (e.g. SQL Server, SSIS, legacy BI tools) will not be suitable
Required Technology Stack:
- Azure SQL / Synapse
- Azure Data Factory
- Power BI Service
