6 month + extensions

I'm currently supporting a major public sector digital programme that is looking for an experienced Senior Developer to join their engineering team. This is an opportunity to work on large-scale, meaningful services used across health and social care, contributing to both greenfield development and the modernisation of existing digital platforms.

The environment is collaborative, user-focused and aligned to GDS-style delivery, with an emphasis on open working, high engineering standards and transparent decision-making.

Role overview

  • Designing and building secure, reliable backend services in Python, following TDD and automated testing practices
  • Developing front-end features using React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript tooling
  • Delivering cloud-native solutions on AWS, working with services such as Lambda, API Gateway, ECS and RDS
  • Working closely with product, design, research and engineering teams in an agile, multidisciplinary setting
  • Contributing to CI/CD pipelines, DevOps automation and infrastructure-as-code
  • Participating in code reviews, technical discussions and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Supporting open documentation and transparent version-controlled design choices
  • Balancing new feature delivery with the ongoing improvement of existing services

What they're looking for

  • Strong hands-on experience with Python for production services (FastAPI, Django or similar)
  • Solid experience working with React and modern frontend development patterns
  • Proven AWS capability, ideally across both serverless and containerised workloads
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD, automated testing, code quality and DevOps practices
  • Experience within the public sector, GDS-aligned teams or large enterprise environments is highly desirable
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within an agile, multidisciplinary team
  • A focus on engineering quality, clear communication and user-centred delivery

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with the government design frameworks
  • Experience with Terraform, CDK or other infrastructure-as-code tools
  • Exposure to legacy technologies such as Java or .NET (not essential)

What's on offer

  • The chance to work on highly impactful digital services used at national scale
  • A mature engineering culture that values quality, transparency and continuous improvement
  • A mix of modern greenfield work and meaningful transformation projects
  • Flexible working and long-term programme stability
