Lead Data Engineer - London - Hybrid - 85,000 - 90,000

My client is seeking a highly skilled Lead Data Engineer to join their agile data team in London. This hybrid position requires 3 days per week in the office, offering the opportunity to lead a small team while remaining technically hands-on. The role is 80% technical and 20% leadership, ideal for someone who enjoys driving technical delivery and leadership, without stepping away from hands-on engineering work.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, and continuously improve robust data pipelines to support large-scale data ingestion, transformation, and delivery.
  • Utilize Azure and Databricks platforms to ensure high-throughput and reliable data movement across diverse data sources, enabling seamless integration, cleansing, and enrichment of data for analytics and reporting needs.
  • Implement best practices for data pipeline orchestration, monitoring, and error handling to ensure consistent and dependable data flows.
  • Optimize and fine-tune Azure-based data platforms by leveraging deep expertise in hybrid cloud architecture.
  • Continuously assess and enhance data infrastructure performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of BI Developers, providing technical guidance and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Oversee the end-to-end delivery of dashboards and data products, ensuring they are aligned with business requirements and delivered on schedule.
  • Guide the team in adopting industry best practices, innovative solutions, and continuous learning to drive impactful business insights and support decision-making.
  • Enforce data quality standards, governance frameworks, and robust security protocols across all data platforms.

Requirements

  • Proven expertise in data engineering and using Azure, SQL, and Databricks, including implementing medallion architecture frameworks for scalable, reliable, and governed data solutions.
  • Strong leadership and mentorship capabilities, guiding teams through complex deliveries, fostering collaboration, and ensuring adoption of best practices.
  • Skilled in orchestrating complex ETL workflows, integrating hybrid cloud environments, and delivering high-quality data for advanced analytics and reporting.
  • Experience with Power BI, and building dynamic dashboards to uncover actionable insights.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, translating technical concepts into actionable recommendations and aligning solutions with business objectives.
