Job summary
As a member of the Medical Electronics Team you will provide effective and economic management of Medical Equipment for the Trust, and community organisations for which it is responsible by fault-finding, repair, overhaul, calibration, safety test and planned preventative maintenance.Work collaboratively on a day - to - day basis with the Medical Electronics team while building relations with clinical and non clinical staff to ensure service needs are met
Main duties of the job
The workshop assistant is responsible for the day to day support to the Electronics & Medical Engineering Department function and staff; duties consist of the maintenance of a range of basic medical electro/mechanical devices and will include the provision of electrical safety testing, routine service/calibration and minor device repair. The role also includes a range of administrative support duties including the management of stock and the commissioning of new devices and disposal of redundant equipment
Undertaking ward audits of medical equipment loans from the MEL.

Job description
Job responsibilities
To display a high personal standard in respect of selfdiscipline and attitude to work, in view of both the nature of equipment on which he or she may be working and the requirement to liaise with other healthcare professionals, clients and external organisations.
To commission and perform basic repairs and maintenance on a range of medical equipment:- including life support, ventilatory and anaesthetic equipment used within the medical field.
There is a frequent requirement to maintain and repair equipment that is subject to contamination by hazardous substances and bodily fluids.
To ensure that the technical safety of the equipment under his or her control, or jurisdiction is within the prescribed specification as laid down in the relevant statutory documents.
To organise and prioritise daily work schedules, and to work unsupervised, to professional standards in compliance with Department of Health guidelines and relevant standards set by statutory regulatory bodies, the relevant equipment manufacturer and departmental procedures.
To act independently, promptly, and efficiently in response to emergency and unpredictable situations.
To assist as directed in the resolution of safety action bulletins, hazard notices, engineering updates and modifications.
To liaise with equipment manufacturers and external organisations regarding equipment to be returned for service and/or repair and organise documentation and courier where necessary.
To advise healthcare professionals and/or clients, when necessary, in the correct and safe use of equipment.
To attend training courses and to update ones own technical knowledge of equipment. To disseminate this information to colleagues as required.
Supports induction of new starters/ professional supervision, training of apprentices, trainees, support workers.
To negotiate with other healthcare professionals in obtaining access to medical equipment in order to perform routine maintenance and or repairs at mutually convenient times.
To complete all documentation, including safety tests, fault history and commissioning records. To input this on to the departments computerised record system.
To comment and co-operate in the implementation of departmental policies.
To observe guidelines and regulations regarding the safe and satisfactory use of expensive test equipment and tools.
To maintain agreed stock levels and progress the ordering of spare parts as and when needed. Also to be responsible for receiving equipment and spare parts into the department and ensuring its correct logging, storage and distribution.
To attend all wards and departments on a regular basis to perform routine maintenance and when necessary, to carry out limited repairs; this may involve the movement of heavy medical equipment.
To undertake duties of more senior staff as appropriate.
To carry out any appropriate duties as determined by the Head of Medical Engineering
There may also be a requirement to undertake other similar duties as part of this post in order to provide a quality service. These will be consistent with the level of responsibilities outlined above.
